OH, also I haven't been living in London for a long time, so used to living outside London where people are normally are a lot friendlier, the reason I chose the area to live in when I moved to London is because its suburbia and it felt like the old town I live in, its still less friendly, but loads friendlier than the city.

    +1

I feel stupid walking down the road smiling.

    @ fara

I actually wouldn't want to find that out.  Grin

I honestly hated being salamed by every muslim I passed when i was a muslim, I don't want to say hello to a stranger.  I don't want to make eye contact when its not necessary.  I feel awkward and generally just want to be left alone.  So yea, this no smiling business works for me lol.

If I went down the park and random people smiled and said hello, i probably wouldn't ever go park again.

Ella ,  LOL, I don't live in a Muslim area, more Jewish like lol... no but my area is mostly English people, no Muslims around...if there are Muslims they are too westernised to be recognised.

Same here now, but where I grew up in London, there were many many muslims.  Also when i went to Morocco.  I hated saying salam because I had to.

Not a lot of people are friendly where I am.  Sometimes some cheerful older person will say good morning, and I have to smile back and speak.............to a stranger.  hiding  but mostly (and I live in the suburbs just outside of London), people are not overly friendly.

On the other hand my friend goes out and comes back talking about random people she met.  She says I am more hostile looking than her though, so maybe that is why it doesn't happen as often to me.

I'm smiling on the inside.  I have learned not to smile on the outside, some dickheads think you have just smiled at them and somehow this means you want them.   Roll Eyes

But I smile my secret internal smile when I am feeling good.   dance

JWs are so cliquey as well, and if one of them finds out you are a JW too, they act like they are your bestest friend even though you're thinking 'fuck off, I don't even know you'. I always end up feeling traumatised if I go somewhere and people are soooo friendly and want to chat like you're a long lost relative.  mysmilie_977

I suppose London is a lot more 'hard' than other places. Edinburgh seems to have just the right balance for me...

I've only been to London once, and you could tell I was a newbie since I was too polite at the tube station... I let everyone go before me and almost missed getting on until my bf grabbed me by the collar and dragged me inside and told me to stop being such a nice idiot Grin

I know what you mean.  Moroccans are like this too.  I know there are a few Moroccans round here, and I actively avoid them realising that i am one too.  I don't need a new best friend who thinks that because we share some imginary link, we will be awesome together. Grin

Oooo you know what else is like this?  fucking mums.

The children's playground at home time is a minefield that I had navigate for a few years.  Mums thinking that because I am a mum and our kids are in the same class, I want to be friends.

Thankfully none of them try with me anymore, since I stuck to monosyllabic replies everytime they opened their mouths.  phew.  Those were some tough years.   mysmilie_977

     Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I used to be overly nice that way too.  I still can be now to be honest, depends what mood I am in.

Mind you, if I go to London, I become the opposite.  I get angry just being that enclosed, surrounded by so many people, that I can become quite dominating trying to get the heck out of there.

Unless I'm drunk, then I'm ok.

Damn, i am such an introvert.  Grin

When will the French invade England and get it over with? It's been like 800 years.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

You can watch the BBC in Canada. It's like England, minus all the bad things. Be prepared to have people stop you and ask you where you're from though. Everybody loves British accents. We might stare a bit, in total awe & admiration of your sophisticated Queensy English-speak. Over here, we just gargle rude noises. :(

I like the North. The Yorkshire Pennines are beautiful. Reminds me of Kashmir but then again so does Bradford.
I like northerners. They have a warmth about them. They wear their hearts on their sleeves. I like that.

You know what I most like about this country?

The fact that I won't get stoned to death.  The fact that I can get a job, quit a job, have sex without being married, drink alcohol or choose to abstain, smoke or not smoke, I can drive, I can vote, I can divorce, I can keep my children in a custody case.  I can get justice mostly not always but far more often than I would had I been born in morocco.

I can earn money, lose money, get an education, don't get an education, have non muslim friends, or devil worshipping friends, tattoo my body if I want, pierce my nipples if I want (and I do want to).

I can be alive as a woman instead of a shadow, all I need to do is embrace it.  All I needed to do was recognise that.

That's what I love about this country,  Why I am so thankful I was born here.

I love all those things too Berbs Afro

I also love the fact that you're rarely ever more than walking distance from a pub or an Indian restaurant.

I love England for all the things Berbs mentioned too.
I love that I am free to be who I am without having to pretend to be this or that just to fit in and be accepted.
It's a good feeling that I still bask in several years after returning home.
I also love that England gives my kids a lot of what they need.

Nah, you can't get good Mexican food in England apart from in a few restaurants in big cities. Its not ubiquitous like Indian food. Although you get tortilla and various Mexican ingredients in the ethnic aisle at supermarkets, there is definitely more awareness of Mexican food than in the past.

Jalapenos, tortillas, nachos, dinner kits, refried beans etc are all easily available, mexican take away/restaurants on the other hand are few and far between, there's one in a town near me, the last time I went they took 30 minutes to get us some fajitas, burritos and nacho wedges, they didnt even get us the wedges in the end. The first time we went the refried beans had dried up and they were pouring water into them and mixing it together in front of us! Appatising.

There isn't a huge demand in the UK for mexican takeaway/restaurants, I wish there was, there are a few good chains in some cities (like Billy said), but other than that it's very limited.

Me and a friend of mine considered setting up a Mexican takeaway/Mexican food stall in our town, but it wasn't viable.
