     OP - July 23, 2011, 06:55 AM

For those of us that have lived there, been there, are there, share something you love about England or the English way of life. Smiley

    I shall start:

    Canterbury.
I have heard it said that Kent is the garden of England and that Canterbury is the rose. It is a magical town. Shakespearean streets dominated by the beautiful cathedral. Lovely rolling hills and quite woods with abundant wildlife. Spending a year at Canterbury was an incredible experience.

    Pubs.
The cornerstone of every corner of the country, the pint with a friend, the pint for a conversation.

    Snooker.

The long, lazy days of high summer spent in the local parks, with ball, beer and joints.

    Twenty four hour corner-shops.

The sheer magnitude, energy and diversity of London. Its speed and its self-importance.

The musicians of genius over the last half century, the beatles, pink floyd, led zeppelin.

The prominent mythologies of the country today, Tolkien, James Bond, Harry Potter.

Football as a religion and cricket as an education.

If I had to say a negative, it would be no doubt that one. Way to fast for my liking. Tongue

On a positive note, I love the odd day of nice sunshine with a cool breeze, makes South Shields beach a beauty to visit and the funfare next to it a good pass time with a group of friends.

Queues. I love the equality arising from queues and actively seek out queue jumpers who threaten to destroy the system. It wasn't until I saw old women getting barged out of the way by young men at a hospital in India that I truly appreciated what a wonderful social construct the orderly queue is.

England & Britain in general - I love the countryside. Such an amazing mix and contrast in such a small area. One minute you can be in picturesque apple orchards, then gentle rolling hills and lazy winding rivers, then (Highlands/Snowdonia/Lake district) mountains and rushing waterfalls, then ancient woodland with spotted sunshine on the the bluebells then thick forests and so on...

    Love it.  Afro

Oh and I love English/British people in general - they are generally tolerant and moderate not given to extreme political or religious views, have a very healthy scepticism and great dry sense of humour and they always support the underdog  grin12

I love Britain but this is what I see

estates , social division (honestly when I walk into central London its like a completely different world ) ,  racial division , bad facilities in areas where there are alot of ethnic minorities ............. or maybe I'm just bitter because I'm working class lol

My fav city is Oxford.  I also Love London, the country side and sea side in the UK.
UK has offered me the best opportunities in education, and career that I have been deprived of back in the middle-east

Oh yeah don't forget all the enlightenment figures of England (and Scotland!)

    Very true.

I would say, that England (in fact Britain as a whole) has its whole identity linked to pubs.

People used to have huts in which people would ferment barley and congregate in the village before 'pubs' and taverns began as England became urbanised.

Apart from the Lake District, some of the finest countryside in Europe, producer of some of the greatest poets in the English language. Let alone the history and beauty of Yorkshire, the north East. Apart from the great cities of Liverpool and Manchester and all they have given the world. Yeah, apart from people in the north of England being greatly warm and funny and friendly. Apart from all that, yeah, its a 'toilet'

There is as much urban deprivation and blight and inner city bleakness in the south and the midlands as there is in the north.

my visits to england ... i ordered prawns once at a pub.  Was expecting
fried shrimp, but they were served cold, and had roe on them.  That with
a half a pint of apple cider (yanks think apple cider is just a fruit drink, not
alcohol  Cheesy )  and the nice buzz that came with it lol.

the politeness and hospitality i received.

    picadilly square!

the train that took us to the countryside from london.  I love
riding trains!  (that was our main means of travel in tokyo, so
it really felt soothing and familiar)

i really enjoyed fish and chips, and that kind of mayonaise/ketchup
    mix for the chips.
