    So no one's really interested in the brink of a the standard model being confirmed and being just one step away from a Grand Unified Theory in which the notion of a God could be utterly left in tatters? Yeah we'll just read bullshit posts of Ishina's love for Amy Whinehouse, and Zaibas cool stories bro, instead.

    i just saw this thread, and read the article.  absolutely fascinating!

    but i am not smart enough to contribute anything, so i will just
    sit back and listen, and try to learn something lol

    The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has picked up tantalising fluctuations which might - or might not - be hints of the sought-after Higgs boson particle.

    But scientists stress caution over these "excess events", because similar wrinkles have been detected before only to disappear after further analysis.

    Try to actually read a little more, there are now two independent experiments finding something going on in the same region, which looks increasingly likely it is the discovery of the elusive Higgs Boson, something like a 1/1000 chance.  Roll Eyes The first link is from a day or two ago, the other link is from today, the first link tells us about the reaction from the LHC in Europe, and the second link tells us about the experiments being done independently at Fermilab USA also finding similar data at the same energy levels.

    Yes, I have read it KT, but what you don't get is that there has been such fuss over finding the higgs-boson that it's not exciting to me anymore.....so again, once there's a confirmed find then let me know! k.

    Me too. I've been to a few physics lectures and while I understand some of the concepts, most of them just go over my head :(

    Tut: Stardust is actually qualified in physics. She probably know more about the Higgs boson than you do.

    Anyway yes, this is mildly interesting and would be encouraging for researchers. It's far from being confirmation of anything, though.

    I personally found the initial BBC report very interesting because this is precisely the type of news that I have been hoping for from the LHC. And two flukes are better than one, so I’m happy that you posted the second link on here (I had missed that report). Although still not statistically significant, it does seem encouraging that a second independent source has found something similar at around the same mass.

    I hope someone remembers to post on here if these new findings are refuted as mere statistical anomalies (any such result is much likelier to be under-reported, and could therefore easily be missed). If, however, this does turn out to be the Holy Grail, even I would struggle to escape that historic news  dance

    OK, I admit it. That was a fake humility false-flag operation. I actually have an advanced degree in astro-particle proton-silk theory, which I studied for in between my Phd on medieval Tuscan monk philosophy (in Latin of course), and my dissertation on the influence of modalities of cognitive grammar in ancient Sanskrit.

    So I'll admit I am an unprecedented genius of humanity, and that there is only one thing I don't understand in this world;

    LOL...I initially read that first paragraph, and somehow missed the humour, and was in awe of your qualifications for a few seconds wacko

    About women: I accept that, like all other men, you may indeed struggle to grasp them fully. In fact, I have recently accepted a colleague’s advice to firstly assume that they are all crazy, and then to work backwards from there every time any individual act or behaviour of theirs causes confusion.

    I read this thread for the first time, and read the articles. It would indeed be an amazing thing when this particle is discovered at last. I write "when" because I am sure this will be the case eventually.  That being the good news, I don't think that any religion will be convinced of this proof.

    Scientists felt the same way about the aether for decades. Really there's no reason to get so emotionally involved in such models. If we don't find this particle, we'll think of some other way to explain the properties of matter.
