Seems quite interesting, but the particle physics at that level still escapes me. Anyone care to explain why this should make a would-be nerd like me cream my pants (I'm looking at you stardust)?

And it turns out that this was nothing to get excited about....................

    Quote
Ripples of excitement swept through the physics community last month when Cern scientists reported what looked like glimpses of the long-sought Higgs boson. But the hopes have been dashed as it was revealed that the tantalising hints had all but faded away.

Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva noticed intriguing signals in their data in July that they thought might be caused by the elusive sub-atomic particle. But the latest analyses, based on nearly twice as much data, saw those signals weaken considerably. The news was broken at the Lepton-Photon conference in Mumbai.

"We see no striking evidence of anything that could resemble a discovery," Guido Tonelli, spokesman for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector group at Cern, told the Guardian.

probably also worth pointing out that although evidence of higgs field/ocean would neatly explain how matter acquires mass and also would be a step toward grand unification (unification of electroweak and strong forces), gravity would still not be included. we'd probably have to go 'beyond' the higgs feild to incorporate gravity. string theory is probably the forerunner in this respect. and of course calling the higgs the 'god particle' is rather silly, on all levels imaginable.

  • Higgs boson-like particle discovery claimed at LHC
     Reply #40 - July 04, 2012, 10:17 AM

LHC claimed they've made a new discovery of a Higgs like-particle, it is a Boson but at the moment basically we can't say is this is Boson fits the standard model or not, but never the less it is still a discovery, and if it does not fit the standard model then the standard model will have to be changed. Thats my understanding.

This is a 5 sigma discovery, that's 99.977% confidence. The guy at the conference said "We have found the Higgs, we now just need to work out its properties... i.e. what exactly a Higgs is"

I think it was probably called the "God particle" because it is everywhere.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

Rationalizer, this is the old thread. I posted a new thread. Basically they LHC claim to have made a discovery, they have found a boson but we don't know if it fits the standard model or not at the moment, either way it is a discovery or something never seen before in particle physics.

The Higgs was discovered from the way it immediately produces bosons. Scientists have spent the last 2 years closely studying thousands of pairs  yes

someone, summaries it please, why it's important, a proof to what ?
there's more that we don't know the more we know, I'm no physicist, or maybe I should google 'grand unification theories' , by then, my head will implode ..

After seeing countless glimpses of it, the Higgs has finally been discovered. It's a historic moment, we've finally found what's likely to be the Higgs particle. I am stoked and sad.

    I'll be posting more, soon.

Basically, it will tell us why particles have mass, and why electroweak symmetry breaking happens.

It actually fits quite well with the SM, that's one grim thing about it. It's just what the SM predicted, this is sort of a nightmare scenario for beyond SM physics, SUSY and string theory.

It's too early to say that, it might have a different mass to what the higgs boson has, but it is a new particle never the less just calling it the higgs might be too early.
  • Re: First signs of the Higgs Boson - (this is amazing news) (possibly)

Other models have also predicted similar particles so its too early to say it the higgs boson which the SM predicted it maywell turn out to be what the SM predicted but its too early, it could have different mass to what SM predicted so, it might not fit the SM and might fit another model better.
  • Re: Higgs boson-like particle discovery claimed at LHC
     Reply #54 - July 04, 2012, 09:11 PM

The Higgs boson had no defined mass, but the mass range was thought to be around 120-and 180 GeV. They've found a strong signal between 125 and 18GeV, it's exactly what you'd expect from a standard model Higgs. Plus, the decay channels they were looking at were all decay channels for the Higgs boson, in short, this is the standard model Higgs boson.

Like I said it maywell be the higgs boson, but is best to err on the side of caution until all the data is crunched.
  • Re: Higgs boson-like particle discovery claimed at LHC
     Reply #57 - July 04, 2012, 09:41 PM

Can't be sure they've interpreted the data correctly at the moment, because of gamma gamma due 4 lepton excess they see nothing at 119 GeV, it's best to err on the side of caution, but am pretty sure it is the higgs boson.
  • Re: First signs of the Higgs Boson - (this is amazing news) (possibly)

This result is the accumulation of years of data, this is consistent with what the Tevatron found out back in 2011. It's consistent with all other results. After all the sensationalist news and media disaster, you think they'd announce something like that if they weren't absolutely sure about it?

Those in the know, are calling it the Higgs, based on the evidence so far.

I am quite saddened by this discovery, as this kinda brings a nightmare scenario for beyond the standard model physics, but it's a remarkable achievement nonetheless.

There could still be new stuff out there since the LHC has been running at half its capacity. It's yet to begin 14 TeV collisions.

Someone please explain to me what's so nightmarish about the properties of the Higg's boson conforming to the Standard Model, which presumably is the hypothesis scientists were expecting to be most likely? I'm kind a lost about the implications here?

Does this mean we can time travel yet?  Huh?

    how fuck works without shit??
