This result is the accumulation of years of data, this is consistent with what the Tevatron found out back in 2011. It's consistent with all other results. After all the sensationalist news and media disaster, you think they'd announce something like that if they weren't absolutely sure about it?
Those
in the know, are calling it the Higgs, based on the evidence so far.
I am quite saddened by this discovery, as this kinda brings a nightmare scenario for beyond the standard model physics, but it's a remarkable achievement nonetheless.
There could still be new stuff out there since the LHC has been running at half its capacity. It's yet to begin 14 TeV collisions.
