Ask yourself that question. You've suffered plenty of times, do you wish you'd rather not have existed?

There's a good philosophical text on this: http://www.amazon.com/Better-Never-Have-Been-Existence/dp/0199296421

There is also a paper, I will try to find it.

So do you plan on remaining child-free?

Theists especially muslims should definitely stop breeding though. Roll Eyes

See, I don't agree at all with this. Religiousness doesn't prevent one from being a productive, worthy member of a society and humanity in general. Also, my parents being devout muslims didn't stop me from becoming an atheist.

Life is worth living - I don't see anything inherently wrong with having kids in an imperfect world. We'd never get anything done if we spent all day worrying about worst-case scenarios. Having said that though, I do think people have a moral obligation to make sure they get their shit together before having kids. If you're not mentally, physically, and financially stable, don't do it.

I agree ^^ one of my biggest regrets in life is not being mature enough to understand this or understand my ownself before having kids.  I feel sorry for my kids that I wasn't and this in turn has given them their own issues they will have to deal with later on in life.  It is also why I would never ever have children again.  I believe some people are cut out to be parents and some just aren't, and it would be good for people to know their limits before they inflict damage upon a new generation.

Of course it's never going to work like that, wisdom with age and by then it's too late.

I still wouldn't say that that was immoral though either.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I didn't say I agree, it's just a good discussion of the subject. A lot of it depends on what theory of morality you hold anyway.

Ok. Well personally I will be remaining child-free my whole life. It may be because of my experiences with living with a lot of siblings or seeing how other parents' children turned out, but I don't really find parenting something that I'd want to do. I doubt I'll ever regret it either.

z10 and I are still undecided.

It will be probably a good ten years from now, if ever.

I had a similar topic come up when talking amongst some friends who share the common trait of mental illness. They seemed to be convinced that the main reason they would not want children is that it would be cruel to bear a child knowing the genes they will be inheriting and that they would never wish that upon anyone. One of my friends seemed to think her own mother's decision to have kids was a bit selfish considering she knew that many women in her family suffer from bipolar disorder.

Now, I actually found these remarks to be a bit infuriating... We all carry our parents' genes including all the positive and negative influence they may have in our lives. There is no guarantee that an illness will manifest in a child of this family. There is also no guarantee that this child won't develop an illness that is not genetic. I think it's very presumptuous and short sighted to assert that because there is a possibility of developing an illness, one does not deserve the possibility of life.

Suffering is a part of life, as is growth and enlightenment and joy and passion. It is all of those things that make up who we are and the truth is, the pain in our lives is what helps us grow as people. We may look back at our troubled times and think that we wish they didn't happen, but if they didn't we wouldnt be who we are today. If i had a child, knowing that they may develop the same medical conditions that run in the family, I would do my best to ensure that my child is healthy, but if he/she does happen to fall ill.. or suffer in any other way.. I would do everything I can to help them fight through it and come out stronger.
