Medtation is best in a group I have found. If you sit up with back straight, you won't fall asleep. You need to blank your mind. This is difficult at first because your mind wanders. So in between times, try concentrating on something with little detail e.g a speck on a blank wall.Think of nothing but that speck. If your mind wanders, clear it and start again. Eventually you'll discover that your meditation thoughts and images didn't originate from your mind.
For instance, in one group I saw a dog im my mind pacing up and down. I asked a man in the group if he had a dog that did this. Yes, he said that was his dog's trait. But he said, what breed of dog is it? I replied in one direction it was an alsatian, the other a collie. Amazing, he said, my dog is a cross between an alsatian and a collie!

.. Good suggestion Chris.. But I am going to focus on what the lady is saying., She is Damn good, speaks without hesitation.. That Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead Miss  Shreela Flather says
    Quote
Pakistan-born baroness reveals how some of her countrymen have as many children as possible by several wives so as to milk our welfare system...

So I am going to focus on what she is saying and the bukha women

So Chris., do you think I will have similar effects as you had after focusing on speck of dust on wall??

Yeezevee. I get the impression that you are not very old. You were made to accept Islamic laws and limitations without being allowed to ask why. So now you're not only rejecting the teachings but defying them with alcohol and making fun of them.
Like some girls who went to Catholic school and hated the repression so they do something to demonstrate their sexual freedom e.g a neighbour's daughter is a receptionist in a massage parlour and also writes mild porn.

When his cartoon of Jesus is doing stupid things, that is ridiculing Jesus. I'm not a Christian but I can see that Christians would be offended. Lucky for him Christians don't have fatwahs.

I do a mindfulness body scan meditation 5-6 time a week. I began after I apostated, and it I was the only thing that finally enabled me to let go of mild anxiety attacks that I would get almost daily, it also gave me a sense of grounding after leaving Islam and losing that structure in my life.

So if anyone is reading this doesn't meditate and has anxiety problems I personally recommend Peter Levine's book; In an unspoken voice, and David Berceli's; Revolutionary trauma release process, they contain some great advice and exercises. I wish I did this stuff in my teens.

I am becoming increasingly fond of meditation. I like reflecting upon buddhist Doctrine to help me relax, but am hoping to study and engage in Satipatthana meditation.

I was attracted to Buddhism by its ethics, but meditation is also useful.

Meditation is integral part of Budhism

Indeed, which is why I am trying to teach myself about it. I am getting closer, but still have a long way to go.

No meditation is a mental exercise.

Nothing to do with a philosophy!

Just like physical exercise is not a philsophy!

Indeed, I meditate through Hesiod's poems, and many Christians have and do meditate. The term meditation is derived from Latin, and has had its modern meaning since the late 1300s.

I always wondered what the term for meditation is in Arabic.
All I see used are either Tafukkor (thinking) or Ta'ammol (observing). Both far from what meditation truly is; the state of the no-thought.
Anyway, in the stage of belief I'm in, being free of lies and superstitions, I have a very calm mind, happiness and organized thoughts, so i hardly need to meditate.
Nevertheless I do it sometimes by lying in bed (I hate to do it sitting) and emptying my mind completely. Focusing on breathing is a good start for beginners.
    Questions though:
How exactly does meditation bring wisdom?
When we say meditation, are we talking about the same exercise: the state of no-thought?

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

    Meditation brings wisdom?

There are various types of meditation. Some techniques try to bring the chaotic mind to focus so you get clarity of thinking...

Reflection always brings more better understanding...is that wisdom?

No, but listening to Yezeevee sure does - he's, in some respects, the wisest person on this forum, and should you ever wish to follow a 'meditation guru', you could do worse. Age is irrelevant to the possession of wisdom - some people are born wise.
I'm not one of them, however; too much pragmatism gets in the way. For instance, when people start spouting intellectualised speculations, New Age hallucinatory bullshit or just plain wrong-headed bonkers claims about meditation, I put on a relaxation dvd. I know full well that if I lie down in a dimmed room, with my clothing loosened, my shoes and socks off, snuggled under a duvet, and put my dvd on, the soft, insistent exhortations will soon clear my mind, reduce my activity to the feel of my own gentle breathing, lower my pulse rate, abolish my stress hormones and slowly but surely lull me into a gentle nap for 20 minutes or so.  I awake totally refreshed and destressed.

    Or a sense of humour.
It's interesting to note that you are invoking the lowest common denominator, fall back, knee jerk position of implied violence to counter ridicule. Now that's not what you'd call wisdom, is it. Perhaps if you focussed your 'meditation' a little more?

Meditation is useful because it cleanses the mind of bad thoughts, stress, etc.

I like meditation, which I haven't done for months. Although it's relaxing, I find that I'm left more in a 'haze' afterwards and then it's harder to focus on work afterwards.

I really would like to use meditation to improve my self-discipline though, is there anything in particular that can help with that relating to meditation? or just the same blanking the mind technique? Also is it proven that it helps increase your concentration etc?

By training in meditation, we create an inner space and clarity that enables us to control our mind regardless of the external circumstances. Gradually we develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency.
