I'm into freestyling as a hobby and so this is a great way for me to get some instrumentals in one place

A very large part of me wonders why an ex-cop with man boobs and a penchant for copyright infringement within his songs made it big when DOOM didn't.

Oh yah personally I see rapping as a form of instrument in hip hop music. As a rapper basically you are constructing the variation and enhancing the rythym by layering it(on the beat) with the flow/skeleton of your rap.

Thats one aspect that signifies the skill of a rapper. And an extremely important one.

The best beats are the beats that sound the worst. The better a beat sounds, the less room for a rapper to shine. Get a highly repetitive and rather boring beat and spit on it and keep flipping your flow (rhyme schemes, speed, style)

there are different guys rapping on this beat, but they can flip their flows without spoiling the beat, its pretty constricted because hip hop instrumentation is different from other genres in terms of its terrible lack of variation but yeah, staying on the beat and maintaining flow is the key

To be a laid back mc requires skill too, Snoop Dogg is the best example in mainstream rap and I read that hes really good in freestyling, wouldnt suprise me. Being laid back needs swag, chilled/at ease and confidence/being comfortable and spit with smoothness

and it doesnt suprise me that Mr Snoop Doggety Dogg likes weed because it will tremendously help you in achieving that.

Snoop Dogg tends to spell his name, stretch his lines/words, sing a little and rap fast to jam words in a line to maintain rhyming, placing emphasis in pronouncing some parts/words of a line in a certain way, substituting in with a catchy sing songy section is also always highly effective

Good point. I actually listen to rapping more as a rhythm section than for its lyrical content (same with singing - as a lead instrument).

I remember a thread on another forum I frequent (Questlove's Okayplayer) where someone said this in response to the allegation that hip hop is not musical:

you're ignoring a HUGE facet of music which is rhythm, cadence, and syncopation - all fundamental aspects of hiphop music. rappers who can actually RAP tend to be extremely rhythmically skilled, probably more-so than artists in any other genre IMO.
