     OP - September 04, 2011, 08:51 AM

The event is taking place 13-15 April next year amd is definitely worth attending Imo

    Anyone from this forum going?

I really want to go but not sure if my bf will be up for it- he's not interested in religion or the lack of religion.

It will be in Melbourne, Australia. Tickets are $440 AUD which is around £290 for the best seats up front + $150 AUD for the gala dinner (approx £100)

Flight to Oz? I think around £700

Accommodation will be around £100 a night

I really want to go but if I am then want to spend some time there- really want to have a go at surfing. So my plan is to fly to melbourne for the convention, then travel to whatever beach is best and continue holidaying there for a week or so.

    Anyone else up for it??

If a girl is then I'm happy to share hotel room provided you don't snore!

Are you afraid of getting cooties from the lowly commoners in a hostel?

As much as I'd like to, I think I'll wait until something like that appears closer to Scotland!

This assertion is ignorant at best- that I wish to stay in a hotel is only due to the fact that I can afford to. If I had limited funds I would stay in cheaper accommodation. Your comment is as silly as saying 'you think you're too good to drive a crappy car' or 'you think you're too good to live in a small house' or 'you think you're too good to not wear second hand clothes'

We spend what we can and accept what we have to. If you can afford to stay in a 'better' place this is not an insult to those who can't afford it, merely a luxury you can afford that any person would enjoy had they the means

Anyway, I spoke to my bf and he's happy to accompany me (yay) so I don't need anyone for company. I hate going places alone, I feel so odd. I wish I didn't. I wish I could feel comfortable alone, going to the cinema, a restaurant. I was shopping a while back which I prefer to do alone since it's a hateful necessity and stopped to eat at Pizza hut cos I was hungry. This was my first time eating alone in a 'restaurant' and even though I want to be comfortable with this I couldn't help but feel like a loner/loser!

Atheist convention my ass. If I wanted to be stuck in a room full of people telling me whats been painfully obvious for the last 10 years, then I'd go and talk to the sales staff pcworld.

Its just a money making scheme for the most part. If I had the time I'd start arranging these things here in England (for exactly the same profiteering reasons).

    I am. lol
I wouldn't be caught dead in a hostel.
Its a 4-5* hotel with a pool and all day buffet or nothing.

You just proved my point: that you only think in terms of money -- as if something more expensive/luxurious makes it better. Some of the best food I've had has been in cheap restaurants. Likewise, some of the best experiences I've had traveling have been in hostels.

Holidaying and surfing and barbie on the beach - yes! Smiley

The reality is money provides assurance, not better. You can enjoy cheap, but there's no guarnatee. The only thing money provides is the right to be an asshole if things aren't right. Staying at a hostel can be fun, true, I love the idea. Reality- it can be dangerous and intrusive, as well as dirty and also lacking in certain provisions.

You assume I only think of money from such short statements? That's silly. I happen to enjoy many things that don't requrie money. I love to make things, I love to wals in parks etc, I love trees, I love to read, I love to talk and listen to new ideas, I love to experience life in all it';s bounty. Many of the greatest things are free so to speak, and I'm grateful for those, but there are some wonderful things that only money can provide, which I have yet to experience

I'm not a born rich person, I've only recently started to make money and I'm excited. Who wouldn't be! I've always wanted to LIVE and money offers me so many opportunities that I didn't have before. I want to travel, to go surfing in OZ, to visit awesome sites and engage in activities like bunjee and sky diving. I've always wanted to do these things and could never before afford it. Now that I can why is it that you seem to resent this? Why are you adamently forcing me to NOT enjoy money, to not enjoy the things money can offer. I've done the poor thing and had a wonderful time. I've had great fun staying in hostels also, living in india in a musaafar khana that hardly costs £2 a day, struggling to buy shopping so you really appreciate that one night out a month where you go out and get pissed, to engage in activities that don't require wealth, to love, laugh etc. I've done them and continue to do them. Just cos I want to spend money now that I have some doesn't mean all of a sudden I never go to Mcdonalds and only dine at the finest establishments, I never keep things simple (I really want to go camping/backpacking/etc), I never appreciate the simple things like a good book, my fave alcohol (fancy one) isn't suddenly champagnbe just cos I can afford it, I still prefer the £5 a bottle Martini Asti as a treat when I celebrate.

This post is sensible and made me think- do I really want to go? I can see the whole thing on vid and get as much out of it. Plus, I don't intend to join any cause to promote atheism or make a big issue or get all smart and technical. Also, I know what I believe so it's not like I need to go to learn anything.

Your message has appealed to my sense of logic and I think it might be worth popping into if it's localish, like somewhere in the UK or Ireland like the last one, but perhaps it's a bit too much to go all the way to Oz for, plus it's super expensive, plus it'll probably be quite boring.

I still want to go to Oz though but for the surfing/barbie/beach stuff  Afro

I'm sure more of us would go, but we're not all rich like you-- just underachievers. We're all lazy and/or stupid which is why we aren't as well off as you.

  • Re: World Atheist Convention 2012
     Reply #13 - September 04, 2011, 10:43 PM

That's no excuse, I'm lazy and stupid too  Tongue

Wealth is not the only measure of achievement. It's just a useful tool really. My life is so basic you'd laugh. ATM I'm living in a tiny (rented) house in mid wales, I'm wearing scruffy ass clothes, I eat regular food cooked from the local shop's produce, I don't have anything attributed to wealth. The first proper holiday I've been on in my life is last yr to asia which didn't turn out so great cos I didn't realise Asia is cold in Jan-March  Roll Eyes

Like I said somewhere else, wealth is a new thing to me and I don't have a lot of it, it's just starting to dribble in and I'm happy. I'm sorry if that makes others feel bad. I'm a bit childish a lot of times. When I get a big lollipop (no inuendo intended!) I want to show off to my friends not to make them feel crap but cos I'm excited. But then, as with the lolly, the misery and envy of said friends causes the delicious treat to lose flavour.

Why do you feel the need to hate on me cos I feel happy to have stuff?

Haha when I read that in the other person's post I thought of the doll too... then realised it meant barbecues, at least that's what I think

    Anyway, I meant barbecues

However, speaking of dolls I do love them but I prefer unusual ones, like this creepy weird J-style doll I got at a con, anime figurine dolls and gotta love the Bratz dolls  Afro

     Reply #17 - September 04, 2011, 11:10 PM

When I was broke I never hated those with money, but I did feel jealous. I wished to have stuff too.

The desire for things is what creates this sort of resentment since you clearly show the hatred is not because the 'rich' have flawed characters (they are all different), but you simply hate/resent them for having wealth.

Class resentment is hurtful. If the 'rich' hate the poor and have ideas like they are inferior/trash/don't deserve help/if they want something they can bloody well work for it themselves the lazy so and so's- this would lead to a very sad state of affairs. There have been civil uprising due to class wars.

If the poor hate the rich they will feel bitter and angry, lose appreciation for the things they do have. Also, is it fair to hate someone simply because they have what you don't? I know many 'rich' people who are annoyingly down to earth, humble simple people (my bf) and many poor who are totally up themselves.

So in your view it's fine to hate a person simply for having more wealth than you, or more wealth than a certain amount. In this regard it's totally fine to hate anyone who happens to

    look better than you
Is more intelligent than you (academic achievements)
    Is stronger than you
    Is taller/slimmer than you
    Is better at sports
    etc

This is foolish and ignorant. If you feel like you're not good enough then that's your problem, not a reasonable excuse for hating out of jealousy. If you don't like your life/level of wealth/educational achievements/etc then work to improve it instead of hating
  • Re: World Atheist Convention 2012
     Reply #18 - September 04, 2011, 11:18 PM

I prefer the idea of wiping out the bourgeoisie entirely and the workers having democratic control over the means of production and distribution. You may have escaped from your class and see individual achievement as the answer, but history shows that leaves billions behind in miserable conditions-- some of us have opted for class struggle instead. This is what you don't understand. The system that made you well-off grinds millions down every day, many of whom won't live long enough to even attempt to make it out.

    fuck you
  • Re: World Atheist Convention 2012
     Reply #19 - September 04, 2011, 11:32 PM

    1. The system didn't make me well off

    2. I don't know anything about all that other stuff. You will need to tell me more and explain to me

    3. Rich is a relative term- I'm not a billionnaire oil tycoon or the owner of BT or something, I make money from writing and selling stuff (accessories). I'm not a part of any kind of mechanistic system to trample the poor.

    4. I never escaped from my class. I've always had class, as has my mother and my grandmother before her who all struggled financially. Class is not determined by wealth, just how much you can spend, what you can buy, etc. NOT CLASS.

    5. Everyone can't be on top. If human intelligence increses overall should everyone study medicine? How many doctors do we need/can we have? If everyone got equal wealth then why bother to work harder? Why bother to struggle? For a long time both my partner and I have only worked 24/7 to 'get rich(er)'- if this was to be distributed equally then why would we bother? Why would anybody bother?

    6. You assett that somehow poverty equates to higher integrity, when all it really means is you have less. Humanity strives for prosperity. Some people work hard to get what they have, and are damn grateful to have it. Some people work hard but never succeed, but feel value in that they try, and some sit around waiting to get rich (lottery?) or hoping for a magical system that'll force the rich to spread their hard earned wealth so everyone is equal

Well I say fuck to that. Work hard, play hard. You want more, then work hard. My dad was a bus driver and my mum worked part time as a social worker (aide on low pay) yet they managed to get stuff, they worked hard, didn't spend, saved, didn't expect everything on a plate.

You hate that some people have money? That's ridiculous. You're 'argument' has no logical basis and your ideas on a system where everyone shares the wealth and is essentially equal is perposterous

Intellectually weak? As I said, I have no knowledge of the topic you proposed (getting rid of the burgeoise)- is it intellectual weakness for a person to not know everything about everything?

Also, I'm obnoxious about wealth?  Cheesy

Nope, you fail again in your comment. I'm a very open person, that's all. This is the internet. You don't know me and sometimes I discuss things that require the mention of my real life situation. 2 yrs ago I'd have happily publicised my abject poverty, sure you wouldn't have a problem with that

Why do people villify wealth while coveting it, make it a dirty little secret, if you have it you must jump through hoops to pretend you dont? Is that normal? Is that right or fair? I think it's pretty stupid. I'm here anonomysly to talk openly, why would I hide my lifestyle etc? To what avail? To appease YOUR tiny ego?  Cheesy

If I knew you irl would you hate me for driving a porche (i don't have a porche or a licence yet!), or wearing designer clothes or living in a big house on a huge estate? Yes, you would because you suffer from insecurity and feelings of inadequacy, You're projecting. It's not that I have a problem with people with less, it's that YOU have a problem with people who have more cos it makes you feel worthless.

Beautiful women should wear nikaab so they don't cause jealousy in others and hatred
The rich should live as paupers to not make poor people feel inadequate and lame
Intelligent people should say stupid things to not make less intelligent people feel thick

     Cheesy

They are 2 different ones i think, but I don't care, I just want to be at one of them, or all of them.

If I didn't have kids and I had money, I would totally go do that.

It's a shame your bf isn't prepared to do things with you that you like, and yet you live how he likes, alone and isolated way over in Wales.  That doesn't really sound fair to me.

I get not liking doing something, but a bit of give and take.  He can be mr prim and proper all year, but at least go away with you to do something you would enjoy.

No, this is wrong. I love this isolation 90% of the time. I just miss having friends. Leaving uni left many behind, leaving islam left the rest. As well as many friends getting married, having kids etc so they're all 'grown up' while I'm still enjoying life free.

My bf is great and supports me in everything, he was even up for going all the way to oz with me for the atheist con even though he's not into it at all. I really want to foster when we move to our new house, and he's not that into kids, but he's up for it for my sake. He really is a great guy.

But he doesn't like what he doesn't like. He goes fishing at night a lot, I'd hate it if he insisted I go with him! We do a lot together, and he does a lot with me if I ask him to, but I prefer doing things with someone who's as into it as me. If I told him to go carnival with me he'd say yes in an instant, but I can't make him get drunk and silly, dance around and be all crazy. I can't expect him to be the way I want as and when it suits me. I like the way he is. I don't want or need him to do everything with me. I just need to find some friends who will!

Maybe you should ingratiate yourself into our life, then we can dump your kids on my bf and go carnival!!!!  grin12
