There's been some talk about the show Continuum lately, so gave it a shot for three episodes. Three things can be said: boring, poorly script and bad acting.

I just watched the first two seasons of Vikings. Pretty damn good show.

    And an absolutely amazing soundtrack!

It also made me interested in reading about Scandinavian mythology.

Because pantheons tend to have personalities, or personifications of primal elements, passions, appetites, themes that intrigue us and underpin our humanity. Instead of the single spoiled and self-congratulatory brat of monotheism.

That sounds right. It's far more intriguing to have Gods with personalities, human attributes, and flaws.

What Ishina said. When it comes to the polytheistic religions, the gods tend to be so wonderfully human. It's what captivates up.

I would recommend looking into the writings of Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a muslim traveller who spent considerable time among Vikings, who he called Rūsiyyah.

    Quote
One of the Rūsiyyah stood beside me and I heard him speaking to my interpreter. I quizzed him about what he had said, and he replied, “He said, ‘You Arabs are a foolish lot!’” So I said, “Why is that?” and he replied, “Because you purposely take those who are dearest to you and whom you hold in highest esteem and throw them under the earth, where they are eaten by the earth, by vermin and by worms, whereas we burn them in the fire there and then, so that they enter Paradise immediately

    Quote

I have seen the Rus as they came on their merchant journeys and encamped by the Itil. I have never seen more perfect physical specimens, tall as date palms, blond and ruddy; they wear neither tunics nor kaftans, but the men wear a garment which covers one side of the body and leaves a hand free. Each man has an axe, a sword, and a knife, and keeps each by him at all times. Each woman wears on either breast a box of iron, silver, copper, or gold; the value of the box indicates the wealth of the husband. Each box has a ring from which depends a knife. The women wear neck-rings of gold and silver. Their most prized ornaments are green glass beads. They string them as necklaces for their women.

Ibn Fadlan, on the Rus merchants at Itil, 922

The season two finale of Hannibal was the best thing I have ever seen on TV. I was rendered speechless with shock and awe. They can do what the hell they like with the Thomas Harris canon as long as they keep being this excellent.

They somehow managed to make it more brutal than the Red Wedding. The last act was as gripping and intense as anything I've ever seen on TV.

How I imagined the true Hannibal Lecter once he removed the mask pales in comparison to the monster they portrayed here. Mostly thanks to the incredible acting of Mads Mikkelsen. It's something I've been waiting for since I started watching it and it surpassed my expectations.

I often get overexcited by good acting. But I am genuinely awestruck by the talent of Mads Mikkelsen. The same goes for the art direction. It might just be that this particular arrangement of elements plucks my strings, and that other people find it not impressive, or just 'good'. But to me that finale was the pinnacle of excellence. The very highest order of things that grab my attention. It deeply affected me. Art of this quality often makes me wonder why the hell I'm even bothering to study film, because there are people already so far ahead of the game. Then I realise how amazing an adventure it's gonna be playing catch-up.

Anyone been watching the new season of 24?

I have. Still watch it as a guilty pleasure. 24 has never been the kind of show I could take seriously, but it's fun nonetheless. And, I love Yvonne Strahovski (the blonde gal), so that's a plus for this season in my book.

TV Shows I've recently watched/am watching:

Orphan Black: Just finished season 2. I didn't like the finale at all. But other than that the show was still doing alright.

Orange is the New Black: Fantastic show. Loved both seasons and I'm glad someone talked me into it because I had pretty much written it off as something I would never like.

Silicon Valley: Watched it all in one day. At first I hated it because it seemed like Girls for geeks (I hate Girls) but turned out to be pretty awesome. Big Bang Theory should take notes Wink

    Spartacus: My traditional Ramadan re-watch.

Penny Dreadful: I started it a while ago, liked it, then stopped around episode 4 because it bugged me and bored me. Then I picked up episode 5 and it kicked my ass. So I'll be finishing it pretty soon. For a show so chock-full of clichés, it's really cool and sets a nice mood.

Veep: Just finished the third season and liked it so much I decided to re-watch the first one. This show is awesome.

I think that's about it for now.
