    I think they raise many good points, especially when it comes to the ecological unsustainability of human life.

    So, one of the main things I wonder is, why doesn't this idea have more mainstream support?

    Edit: They advocate the extinction of human beings through voluntary cessation of reproduction. Sorry should have made that more clear.

    Do you think nature/planet earth/whatever has awareness or conscience understanding of whether we exist or not? We're a speck of dust that will vanish soon enough and be forgotten, why rush it?

    "Damage" is relative. Earth, nature and other species don't have the consciousness to understand damage, because it's not a singular entity with intents or purposes. We only call it 'damage' because it affects us. I don't get this concept of 'protecting' nature for the sake of protecting nature, it makes little sense. We do all this shit for ourselves to begin with. Once we cease to exist, so does the relevance and importance of protecting nature, since we won't be there to percieve it.

    So yeah, this is stupid.

    The damage done to the biosphere will eventually be fixed once nature blows us away due to the imbalance we have caused. What we should fear is our own perishing, because that is exactly what our wasteful lifestyles will lead to. Nature can protect itself.

    Short of asteroid or other catastrophic extinction event, I don't see this happening. Also as our technology increases, so does our ability to avoid the effects of these natural checks. Leaving us once again free to recklessly harm the planet.

    By voluntarily bringing about our own extinction, human-beings would be the entities acting altruistically. I don't see what's so difficult to comprehend about human beings carrying out moral actions.

    Morality is a product of sentience. You can't apply morality to non-sentient things. You might as well tell me to be altruistic toward my table. I mean, isn't the main argument for animal rights that they are sentient beings? No one can argue for a morality otherwise.

    All I'm saying is that the only reason any of us care about "nature" is because we are part of it. Caring about nature for the sake of caring about nature is some sort of weird religion.. not reality.

    Ahh, missed this at first.

    I think the case for such an altruistic act such as voluntary extinction could be built on similar grounds. I.e. it is a moral imperative to consider the welfare of sentient beings on the planet who are unable to protect themselves from the side-effects of human excesses, or something along those lines.

    Hence the idea that this is a position on which morality would apply could certainly remain intact.
