    Scientists discover planet with two suns

    US astronomers say they have discovered the first planet that is orbiting two Suns, much like the fictional home of Luke Skywalker featured in Star Wars.

    Skywalker's native planet of Tatooine was hot and desert-like, but this planet, called Kepler-16b, is a freezing-cold world about the size of Saturn, orbiting two parent Suns in a near-perfect circle about 200 light years away.

    The planet was glimpsed with the US space agency's Kepler space telescope, which monitors the brightness of 155,000 stars, according to the research published in the journal Science.

    "This discovery is stunning," said co-author Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution for Science Department of Terrestrial Magnetism.

    "Once again, what used to be science fiction has turned into reality."

    While astronomers have previously glimpsed planets they believed were orbiting two stars, they had never before seen one actually passing in front of its two Suns so this discovery offers the first proof.

    "Kepler-16b is the first confirmed, unambiguous example of a circumbinary planet - a planet orbiting not one, but two stars," said co-author Josh Carter of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

    No, the planet is a bit smaller than Jupiter, more akin to Saturn. It lies just outside the habitable zone with temperatures around -100C. If this planet had a moon with a thick atmosphere, kinda like Saturn's own moon Titan but an atmosphere made up of greenhouse gases, it could have water and it would be habitable.

    Heard about this on the TV news. They stated that the planet was in our galaxy but "not in our solar system" and I had an overwhelming urge to shoot the TV.

    Yes. Sometimes it is frustrating to realize that facts as simply as, ''Our solar system only has one sun.'', need to be clarified. However, consider the situations of many people in the current social condition of the world. Child who are never allowed to play outside and are only exposed to the alien worlds of there video games. These child may never have lookd up into th sky of this world and contemplated the fact that it has only one sun. Many, many adults rise and begin their work day in a climate controlled environments long before the sun rises. They are consealed from the sun until well after it sets. During their busy day these people may not have stopped to consider if this world has a sun at all, let alone if it has one or two.  Think  of how many people you know who seek the night life and blink  painfully at the light of day. Do you think they consern themself with the munber of suns iin the sky?
    Look at the concern if there is water on that planet and if it can be transported here should the need occur. That is planet 200 light years away. Most people do not stop to think where sceince stops and sceince fiction starts.

    Odd, I would have never guessed that a planet that orbited two suns would orbit them in a near perfect circle. I would have thought it to move in a figure eight around and inbetween the suns.

    No, because it cannot actually do that. All three bodies orbit the centre of gravity of the entire system.

    Just wondering. It has been awhile since I've read much on this topic.

    I was thinking that most bisolar system were thought to rather unstable.  Where planets in more distal orbit were not totally owned by either sun.

    In your discrpition what would be at the gravitational center of that bisolar system? One of the suns?
