  • March and Rally for a Secular Europe - TODAY (Saturday 17th Sept) in London!!!
     OP - September 17, 2011, 12:53 AM

Care about freedom of religion and belief, equal rights for women and LGBT people, inclusive schools and one law for all regardless of ethnicity, religion or gender? Fancy a joyful march through London today (Saturday)? Then come join the March for a Secular Europe!

We're meeting at 10.30 am at Temple Place (Victoria Embankment), the march starts at 11:30 am and the rally opposite Downing Street is from 12:30 until 14:30. Come down, see what's going on and maybe come say hello Smiley

Well that was fun! Smiley The weather (god) was on side throughout for a suntastic march through London to Downing Street, calling for a secular Europe and, hell, a secular world! What a wonderful show of support from secularists from across Europe who came from across the continent to get their message heard. Later, during an orangemen marched, it pissed it down Smiley. Lots of chanting (and a little bit of post rally drinking) has wrecked my throat for the foreseeable future, but it was most definitely worth it.

It was great to see CEMBers there: Fariborz Pooya, Maryam Namazie, Loki, Chinadoll, Pariah and others whose usernames I'm not sure of. For anyone else who could have made it but didn't: if you folks want the issues of ex-Muslims to be pushed up the secularist and humanist agenda, never mind those of wider society, these are the sort of events you need to make your presence known and felt at. The world is not going to come to this forum, so try harder next time!! Thanks to everyone who came...see you all at the next one Smiley.

^I'm not too sure, but I don't think it could have been much over a thousand at most. Quite a few people came to the march but not rally, or vice versa, or they came by to hang out after the rally finished. Where are you based Nilly...UK or further afield?

What an awesome march and rally! There some fantastic speeches at the rally, some very moving, especially by Maryam Namazie and Sue Cox. The post-rally drinks were lovely too, great to see some cembers there and meet other atheists. Smiley

Hopefully next year there will be an even better turn out - come out lazy peeps!!!

Is this a picture of the event? If so, I don't see any sign of the organizations "Hijabis against Sharia" or "Secular Burqa wearers against the imposition of Burqas on unwilling wearers". Weren't they present?:

    That's an anti-Pope march, specifically.

Good stuff, chris. Do you know when the next one is being held?

Ferrero, there are plans to make this and the National Secular Society's Conference on Secularism (held the weekend prior) an annual event, so next summer at some point. One of the groups present were Survivor's Voice. They are victims of clerical child abuse who have come out to push for justice and to support others in similar situations. They are having a party on the 29th October, in Rome Smiley. If anyone wants to go, let me know.

Pariah, whilst you might have a lesser cocoa content than ChinaDoll...there is still, frankly, chocolate all over your face. I've discussed the option of coating ChinaDoll with white emulsion in the hope that it might give her an air of respectability, although frankly I think her chocolaty nature might still show through.

    Anyway, back to the music...
