    That's not what narcissism means.

    Quote
In everyday speech, "narcissism" often means inflated self-importance, egotism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. In psychology, the term is used to describe both normal self-love and unhealthy self-absorption due to a disturbance in the sense of self.

I don't even see the connection between overconfidence and selfishness.

Besides, that article is another case of a study concluding the obvious.

Narcissism can mean a number of different things, overconfidence is one characteristic of it.

The study is less about narcissism but more about overconfidence.

Cheesy Cheesy That's what over confidence does--you end up giving wrong titles to your articles!
But seriously can't over confidence indicate that you think too highly of yourself?

"Thinking too highly of yourself" is vague and doesn't necessarily make you a narcissist. Narcissism is about loving onself so much that it makes one lack empathy. If a guy is confident he's going to win a fight even if the odds are against him, that doesn't make him a narcissist.

Yeah, I'm not sure how overconfidence and narcissism are interchangeable.  Huh?

Well it's National Geographic that is at fault here. They tend to do this kind of thing a lot. They try to over-simplify concepts for the "masses" who they assume are stupid... they are archeology and anthropology's equivalent of pop-psychology.

I've always wondered is narcissism an external projection to shield a person's inner insecurities of themselves?

Narcissism has several meanings, I think you're referring to narcissitic personality disorder?

Which definition of narcissism means overconfidence?
  • Re: Evolution of Narcissism: Why we are overconfident and Why It works

None, I do agree overconfidence is just one trait of a narcissist. The article really does fuck this one up by conflating the two terms. I understood your point, I'm just pointing out there are healthy forms of narcissism or 'self-love' which are crucial to childhood development. People often view narcissism as a bad thing, but there are different degrees of it which are important to our emotional development.

yes In a way narcissim is over confidence and self love gone wild.
You become over confident about people being able to take your obnoxious shit, which you think you are entitled to inflict upon them[extreme lack of empathy which manifests as NPD].
So the bottom line is, as with everything else in life:
MODERATION IS THE KEYA fact that is very easily overlooked in this age where people like everything oversized and spend a fortune on increasing their size of their penises, boobs, etc.expecting eternal pleasure!  Cheesy

In western society they go large lol but in japanese society they have a habit of under-sizing objects, smallest trees for Gawds sake. Something to do with the penis perhaps.

Narcissism - everyone might have latent narcisstic tendencies but there are some out and out narcisstic loonies out there. Perhaps it is an evolutionary, innate risk-calculated startegy to fulfil a goal. Mostly a hole.

LOLing at the fact that the majority of responses were contributing to an argument about semantics rather than the article content.

having now read the article, i still think narcissism is an evolutionary trait that was primarily there because the need to spread ones seed was one of the most important functions of our ancestors, and to our sperm the chances of them replicating themselves was worth the risk.

That one chance at glory was worth all the trouble narcissism could lead you to.
