    And I meant advantageous!

I've been paranoid - that's really the only word for it - that I am missing the point. Sort of like how certain types of autistics miss social cues: it seems painfully obvious to most of us, but they blunder on unaware.

I've had this fantasy of some theist sitting me down and saying something like "Look, you unsophisticated idiot, obviously no-one really believes in a sky-fairy who created the vast and inscrutable universe, yet concerns himself with some uppity monkeys on a backwater planet. But we monkeys - for whatever reason - need to believe in that sky-fairy, and if we fake it well enough, it may as well be true, for the little time we do have."

Anything short of that, i.e. a collective and unified understanding, and I will remain a fervent enemy of mysticism in all forms. Its not enough that we are evolutionary adapted to believe, or even that it might provide a happier life. That's not enough for me.

you have no idea what mysticism is if you think you need some sort of sky daddy to be a mystic.

Ibuprofen, Bertrand Russel said that there is no virtue in believing something because it is useful, you believe in it because it is true. I concur with him.

There is currently no particular reason to think that the experience is never going to be quantifiable in physical terms. You are assuming that consciousness and perception must somehow transcend the purely physical. You have nothing to support this assumption. You may be right, but you may not. At the moment we simply don't know.

Given the advances we have made in understanding brain function and how purely chemical factors affect perception, who knows where the limits are?

This needs emphasising considering how often intelligent people assert such claims akin to the pious who presumed similarly only to have scientific progress shatter their narrow worldview.

Sometimes you can cut them some slack considering how astoundingly unfathomable and awesome these scientific discveries happen to be. Plus we're so thirsty for knowledge that sometimes current limitations are frustrating. But that's still no excuse for pretending to know more than one does.

Against the ruin of the world, there
is only one defense: the creative act.

Wealth is an advantage until it's not

    (Clicky for piccy!)

And I'm back to thinking you're a troll-- way too many inconsistencies with you and you just don't add up-- however, you're the best troll this forum has ever seen if I'm right.

the off-hand margeret atwood references when she joined sealed the deal for me

It's quite evident that a troll to many on this forum is anyone who has the ability to disagree logically and with adequate reasoning. I see no evidence to suggest otherwise. The whole thing's a farce. In fact, it seems to me that many people on this site have replaced belief in one make-believe entity with an entirely new make-believe one. *Sigh* some people never learn.

Learn to discuss with logic and reasoning so you don't have to resort to pushing your emergency 'troll' button.

Also, the Margaret Atwood remark? Remind me because (unlike some people) I have far too much going on to remember each conversation verbatim. I would, however like to just say- Margaret Atwood is awesome (although consecutive book reading can be repetitive but Alias Grace- OMG what a good book!)

     Cheesy

Yeah that's it. Because logic is clearly your strong point.

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...
