     OP - September 24, 2011, 05:45 PM

    I hail from a devout Muslim background and often the talk of Jinns and Angels irks me. They cite various incidents where people get possessed and a certain Peer then cures them....

    How do I respond?

    Punch people and smash glass objects. When someone tries to exorcize you using the Quran or prayers, continue punching people and smashing glass objects.

    I have yet to see any (good, scientific) evidence that jinns exist.  Till then I refuse to believe in them.  They are supposed to be roaming the earth yet only gullible, religious people seem to be affected by them -- and only the religious sects which place an emphasis on them.  Curious, don't you think.
     Thinking hard

    If someone is convinced they experienced contact with a jinn, and they want to believe it, fine.  I still can't take their word for it.  I need either solid scientific evidence, or a personal experience myself that cannot be explained away.  And frankly I'm not holding my breath, because these kind of claims are very easily explained away by science or just common sense.

    hers something I wrote elsewhere

    One thing about muslim people is their belief in djinns, which to me if they existed is proof of the supernatural. Every muslim seems to know someone who has witnessed a possession of a human being by said djinn. I think these are islamic versions of urban myths/legends. But muslims have to believe in djinns because it says so in the Quran.

    But why has not been filmed (a possession, a djinn, anything which remotely looks and feels supernatural), it cant be that hard.

    I mean Youtube, if i am correct has 24 hours of video uploaded every minute.

    The chances of being struck by lightning are 1 in 700,000, the chances of someone filming someone else being struck by lightening are perhaps one in a billion. Last time i looked on youtube for this, there were 7 instances of this. The chances of that are probably astronomical but it has been filmed.

    Howcome there is not a single second on youtube of ANYTHING supernatural - especially taking into account the many reported djinn possessions etc. Nothing, Nada.

    basically if one in a billion events can be captured on camera why not any instances of the supernatural, especially as djinns outnumber us human 9 to 1, supposedly.

    Me: No they don't, c'mon son grow up.
    Elder bro: Well, what do you call someone, who doesn't believe even when he is given proof?
    * Me stares at Elder bro all confused.
    Elder bro: No its just that I have met someone in Pakistan who can control a Jinn!
    * Me facepalms himself.
    * Enter mother
    Elder bro: So tell me now, you porkfucker! Do you believe in jinns now, huh fucker?
    Mother: Dont be stupid. That guy doesn't have any Jinns, he is an alcoholic druggy and a conman!
    * Elder bro is stunned while Me is hysterically laughing.
    Mother: But yeah, Jinns do exist.
    * Me stops laughing.
    Elder bro: Mother you should shut up, you don't know shit OK. There are societies of jinns and not all jinns are Muslim, he has a dirty kuffar jinn.
    Me: But... if thats the case, then shouldnt non-muslims have encountered kuffar jinns. Like in the west? So why all these jinns in Pakistan.
    Elder bro: ... Look you little shit, this is why I asked you what do you call someone who doesn't believe even when given proof!

    As a kid growing up I was always somewhat fascinated with the concept of jinns. I've also heard countless stories of people possessed by jinns and oddly enough they all seemed to take place back home in Pakistan. One time however, when my maternal grandmother went for Hajj she apparently had become possessed by a jinn and proceeded to act a fool and cause harm to herself. Back when I was still a Muslim this scared the shit out of me because they brought her back home in a straitjacket. Oddly enough, this would always happen whenever she flew back home to Pakistan too. I concluded later on (one of my high school teacher's mothers had the same problem whenever she flew back home to Italy) that flying (perhaps change in air pressure) causes some sort of imbalance in the brain and brings on bipolar or schizophrenic disorders.

    I do however also feel that possessions (especially one that are not looked at objectively through science, which happen to be the ones we hear through religious people) are sometimes faked by people for varying reasons.
    Interestingly enough, I recall seeing a special on BBC before where a travelling god man convinced some village people that he was able to heal a possessed woman. He proceeded to perform trickery in order to convince people to ultimately pay up cash for his services. Fortunately the group were educators rather than swindlers.

    The qur’an claims that some jinns are muslim as well. Whenever people talk to me about jinns I tell them that there's proabably a nice, decent, devout jinn family living somewhere, and whose daughter is acting up. Exasperated beyond belief, the Jinn parents declare: “She must have been possessed by a human!”
