THANK GOD! It's about time they got away from using emotional violence. Some of those things cops say really hurt my feelings.

A sailing forum? You think that the group of people with enough money to own a sailboat is a good representative sample of the US?

The only people I've found in my country who don't have sympathy with these protests (of those that know about them) out there in the real world, where most people are more worried about having their houses foreclosed on or making rent or finding a fuckin job or losing their benefits with their current job or the fact they haven't gotten a raise in several years rather than learning about the best types of sails for their boats, are the ideologically hard-right that get most of their info from Fox News and right-wing blogs/websites.

There are people who go sailing who dont own a boat i would say the majority of people who sail dont own a boat because they crew on a boat owned by someone else.
Owning a boat costs money crewing on a boat costs nothing, its usually the owners responsibility to feed the crew and supply them with alcohol so its gets even better for the good crews.
The crew are mostly tradespeople or working class as muscle is needed and pen pushers are not  suitable unless they go to the gym.
Boat owners are looking for crew all the time if anyone wants advice on how to get a ride start another thread about it.

I have been employed by Larry Ellison from Oracle,Dick DeVos from the amway rort i should add he can get fucked i am not interested in being near him ever again for his views on intelligent design and abortions,Phillipe Khan came up with the software that enabled cameras in mobile phones- he got that idea in the middle of an ocean race then went down below deck with his laptop and we sailed his boat.
None of these guys spend any time on internet forums in fact i dont know anyone who earns great wealth and fritters away the hours on the internet.

I am a naval architect so i rarely post and stick to technical issues as there is not much work in my field so pissing people off could cost me money if others advise people to use someone else.

They call it faux news in that forum.

Actually I was thinking more about the kinds of people I run across in New England-- not super-wealthy but well-to-do folks who saved up and own their own small boat. Also the kind of working-class people who become crew for the wealthy for just some beer and food may be the type who truly believe what's good for the rich in this country is good for them.

All the same, point remains that in no way could the people on that forum be considered a representative sample of America.

    fuck you

How the hell is the protest in Portland as big as the one in NYC?

    Quote
Occupy Portland begins: 10,000 march for economic justice

Thursday, in peaceful solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, the occupation of Portland, Oregon, began. According to reports, approximately 10,000 peaceful Oregonians marched from Tom McCall Waterfront Park to Pioneer Courthouse Square Thursday afternoon.

Pac NW has an excellent tradition of militant labor unionism and anarchism-- not surprising there would be big turnout in places like Portland, SF, and Seattle. The unions out there are generally more progressive and militant than on the East Coast, so I would guess that a higher level of union participation might have something to do with it as well.

Hmm.. I've always known the Pacific Northwest is pretty progressive, just didn't know how much. My experience in Portland was a few indie stores and cafes and a bunch of hippie-type people all around.

hey deus, when you have time, your thoughts on the necessity of private banking would be great. I'm actually really curious to hear what you have to say, I don't know much about these issues. Smiley

I don't know much about the banking system, but a friend of mine linked me to this short documentary about the Canadian banking system. I think it's thought provoking, to say the least.

well keep in mind that my views are the minority within the economics community so I wouldn't look to me to be the fountain of truth. I'm not sure where to start because private banking/public banking/ monetary theory are based on other basic theories, none of which are too terribly difficult to understand.  I didn't want to start at the end point without going over the basics.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I think the banking system as it is set up now has been empirically shown to favor a small subset of the population at the expense of the wealth a larger portion of the population.

    in the economics field yes.

     Cheesy

Then its probably a very legitimate one...

After all let's remember that almost all of the models and theories produced by economists operate under the assumption that humans act as rational maximizers at all times.
