No big difference....it's actually: Assalamu Alaikum.

Sorry to be a stupid pedantic about this, but it's actually

    as-Salaamu `alaikum

The ` representing the ayn. In the case of a single man you would say as-Salaamu `alaik, and with a single woman as-Salaamu `alaiki.

Oh I agree in terms of sports, soccer(true football) is way better than hockey.. but I was speaking in terms of NHL... Habs > Leafs  grin12

football is good, especially the World cup but not as good as hockey. Too many times have I seen tournaments that take weeks to play out end in a dumb shootout. (BTW, if you are Canadian and you said that, you should be deported)

I like the Habs, but only when the Leafs don't make the playoffs. Anyone can cheer for a winner but only a true fan can support a team that consistantly disappoints.

The Leafs haven't won the cup since 1967, yet their arena is still sold out everytime.

I also cheer for England during the world cup but inevitably end up partying with the Brazilians.

Hey, I'm not gonna compromise the truth for my country's national sport... I still think there is more skill involved in soccer than in hockey, which I also enjoy watching but cmon, lets face the facts..  Wink

Hey, I never noticed that before. -kum addresses more than two men or a group of more than two people with at least one man in it...

...but then why when you greet the angels on either shoulder at the end of salaah you say -kum.

Hang on... are you sure about this?

I have seen quite a strage trend. Many young Muslims in UK are becoming more religious while those from sub-continent are becoming less religious.

In the UK I think there are becoming more polarised, not necessarily becoming more religious i.e.  some are more religious & others are agnostic (but wont openly say it)

Regarding "as-salaamu 3alaykum": Actually now that I taste the phrase it feels kinda natural for my mouth to produce a w-sound instead of the combination u-3ayn: as-salaam(u)walaykum. May it be that this is a natural phonetic development for english speakers pronouncing arabic? Anybody got a feel if it occurs in other places where u and 3ayn meet?

    as-salaam(u)walaykum.

I always hated that. Some other american converts tried to tell me that was the 'correct' way to say it, I had already taught myself how to read Arabic, they hadn't, "There is no waw in there, it's an 'ayn, get it right!" Roll Eyes

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

Hi everyone, my name is Ali (not my real name, but I don't share my actual name anywhere online). I'm a ex-muslim, now agnostic. I am 19, still living with my muslim family. Only my mom knows I do not partake in the familial beliefs. I'm just biding time till i get my degree and can get a job and move out and live life the way it should be lived.

    Hi AisaLagtaHAI - Welcome Smiley

Would you like to post a quick intro thread in the Introductions forum. (You can just re-post what you just said above if you like).

It used to be an offence I suppose.  Still, it is a sin for Catholics, and a virtue for Protestants. I guess that the Orthodox church is indifferent to it.

Catholics think Jesus asked for it as per Matthew 16:17; The Peter-rock theology where Peter is supposed to be the first Pope.
