  • First drink
     OP - October 02, 2011, 02:28 PM

So as you all know, I'm a hopeless romantic, and a sucker for Omar Khayyam's wine rubaa`iyyaat (talk about bad influences) and Abu Nuwas' khamriyyaat (eh, drinking songs, kinda). Also, I'm a fucking rebel. So I really, really want to try alcohol.

Fortunately, I have a friend who can buy me the alcohol. He's rather, umm, affluent, so he has offered to get me, for my first drink, a bottle of "special proper classic" French champagne. Which is nice Tongue But he said it's an acquired taste, and that I should probably get used to the taste of alcohol first, before trying fancy drinks.

Before that, I was thinking that my first drink should be something like Algerian wine (which used to be a major force on the international wine market before independence) for symbolic reasons (whatever my first drink will be, it HAS to be symbolic of something), or Persian wine (which... apparently they don't make anymore), or, since I love Lebanon, Lebanese wine.

So, you hedonistic, inebriated kuffaar: what do you guys think? What should my first drink be? And are wine and champagne really acquired tastes? What do they taste like?

It will be a waste of drink, to be honest. Your first drink will not taste very nice. So I suggest, Dash of Vodka and Red Bull. The Red Bull will kill the taste of the alcohol, ethanol is a toxic to humans (poisonous) so take my advice and do that, if you want to enjoy your first drink and not be sick all over the place and feel like shit. Dilute your drink and do not jump on wines and champagnes for a first drink stick to spirits, diluted.

Omar was talking about "spiritual" wine Wink

So when you drink it think of the spirit!

My thoughtless hand has brushed away.

I too dance and drink, and sing,

Therefore I am a happy fly,

Drink Weston's organic cider, if you can get it in the Gulf.

Failing that, try something sweet like rum and coke.

The best alcoholic drinks are all bone dry, and an acquired taste.

DO NOT drink to get drunk. Drinking is lovely. Being properly drunk is awful.

I started with beer for my first time. Have you ever tried non-alcoholic beer. Yeah it tastes like bitter tasting plant leaves.

I tried wine twice, the second one was a very fancy old French wine. Wines just taste and smell like grapes that have gone bad.

Whiskey, vodka, rum, lemoncello... All alcoholic drinks that are not at least mixed with something taste like crap to me.

Drinking for two years, really gave it a try. But I honestly still don't understand why people enjoy the taste of these drinks. They all taste like really really really bad medicine. No matter how old, fancy or expensive they are, they still taste like crap.

Like Tut said, if you want to get drunk without the stupid medicine taste that makes you want to puke just from the smell, mix 1/4 vodka with any juice or beverage you like. Orange juice, lemonade, fruit punch, coke, red bull. And I agree, red bull really does eliminate the vodka taste completely. Also don't mix any alcoholic drink with tea or dairy products like milk or ice cream. It will ruin your ice cream.

Three major rules you have to keep in mind:
1- Don't get too carried away when you drink, or you WILL puke and feel horrible the whole night and the entire next day.
2- Beer before liquor, never sicker. Liquor before beer, you're in the clear.
3- Don't do alcohol or drugs unless you're alone(and safe) or with really close friends you can trust.

The whole time, the only reason I drank was to get drunk. It wasn't about the taste for me at all. In fact, I'm slowly drinking less and less often. I am even thinking quitting it altogether.

I dunno, everyone has different taste buds, I guess. :/

Oh and FYI, I was into the whole symbolic thing to. In the end, I realized it didn't really matter.

If you really want to. I suggest you fill a quarter wine glass with French red wine, and a few slices of Swiss cheese.

It all depends on what drinks you are liking and drinking now. Then try a weak-alcoholic version and see if you like the effects of abit of alcohol. Never drink alcohol because you're supposed to like it. It's a free choice!

I dunno, I'm not really getting the symbolic first drink. Wine is a little out there as a decision as it doesn't allow you to form a favorite drink for just hanging around. I'd suggest something sweet as a mixed drink like (as David said) a rum and coke, vodka and juice, White Russian, Kahlua or Bailey's with coffee, etc. Maybe you can ask your friend to bring you some wine to taste a bit along with one of the previously mentioned alcoholic drinks so you get the best of both worlds.

Just like non-alcoholic drinks, alcohol ones vary greatly in taste. People like different things. Champagne was my very first drink, and I thought it was pretty good (it was Russian, and probably pretty cheap, way back when).

Have you heard the good news? There is no God!

Wow. I think Islam permanently affected me, or maybe it's not even Islam. I could never drink alcohol/wine, but I'm still happy without it. I don't want to "acquire" a taste. But if you do decide to drink, please share your experience with us. Stay safe! Afro

I'd personally recommend a nice Chilean red wine. Really accessible sweet and fruity taste, unlike something like beer which is a more acquired taste, and I've been made to drink it for years, and while the taste has improved, I still don't particularly like it. Having said that though, obviously everyone's different.

So I am having my drink right now - vodka and coke been 3 months since my last drink. Like I said before you just need to dilute the alcohol, my first drink was vodka and red bull and I enjoyed the experience too. Like someone said don't get too carried away, since it can hit you slowly and knock you out. You will feel like you're the best person in the world... man I'd give anything to feel how I felt when I had my first drink! lol

until you get buzzed, that's it. If the world starts wobbling (kinda like the dizziness you get after you spin around a lot) then you should stop.

I think your first drink of alcohol should be something disgusting because most of it tastes like shit to begin with...after a while though, you begin to really appreciate the taste. My first drink was a mix JD, beer and red bull and a bit cider all in one mug that my friend handed me. Tasted shit but was a real strong awakening into a liberated life. It's like, if you want to wake someone up from a dream, you gotta splash cold stinging water on them rather than try and massage them awake.
