    لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ فَقَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّـهَ

Fez is an ism 3alam a3jami thulaathi saakin al wasa6

    Quote

    Also:

    Quote
    تعريف الممنوع من الصرف :

هو الاسم المعرب الذي لا يدخله تنوين التمكين ، ويجر بالفتحة نيابة عن الكسرة ، إلا إذا عرّف بـ " أل " ، أو الإضافة ، فإنه يجر بالكسرة .

With sarf it's tanween kasr, without sarf it's fat7a; I don't think one could use just a kasra on that word. How would you justify that in i3raab?

I'm very impressed that such a young lad knows his grammar so well Afro. Most Arabs hate Arabic grammar.

Fez is a foreign word and therefore like most asma' a'jami it is mamnoo' min a sarf/tanween.

I hear what you are saying about full sarf of words with trilteral root and sakin al wasat, but there are exceptions.

وإذا كان العلم المؤنث الثلاثي أعجميا . مثل : بلخ - اسم مدينة
    وجب منعه من الصرف . نقول : بلخُ مدينة جميلة ، وشاهدت بلخَ ، وسافرت إلى بلخَ . بدون تنوين ، وجر بالفتحة -
    http://www.forsanelhaq.com/archive/index.php/t-103707.html

I will change it to Fatha instead of Kasra - as that was a mistake.

This is all academic of course as I will pause on the last consonant. But just want it to be as watertight as I can make it.

    سورة العقل

    قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِعَقْلِ النَّاسِ
    كَرَامَةِ النَّاسِ
    مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِ شَيْخٍ عَدِيمِ الْإحْسَاسِ
    لَعَّانٍ فَاحِشٍ عَبَّاسٍ

    مِنْ كَازَاخِسْتَانَ إلَى فَاسَ

    Sura of Human Reason

Say I seek refuge in the Intellect of man
    The dignity of man
From the evil of every Sheikh bereft of sense
    Cursed, vulgar, frowning,

Religious paranoia that destroys the minds of man

Thanks Tongue I love Arabic a lot (even though I don't think it should be taught at school because technically it's not really our mother language) because when I was a kid and no one would understand my Algerian Arabic at school, I had to use the fus7a I'd learned from TV to communicate with my classmates, and I practically grew up on Spacetoon and Majallat Majid (an awesome kids' magazine). Kamaa qaala 'sh-shaa3ir:

    لا تَلُمْنِي في هواهـا ** أنَا لا أهْوَى سِواها
    لستُ وحْـدِي أفْتَدِيها ** كُلُّـنا اليومَ فِداهـا

I always wondered why proper names in the Mushaf had tanween.

    وَلُوطاً إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِ

I take it it's just because they are indefinite nouns and could, conceivably, be talking about anyone by that name?

Interesting discussion on the 'i3raab,' by the way.

    Quote
Since Arabic has no indefinite article, nouns in a syntactic context unmarked for definiteness are generally indefinite; this has led to the extremely common but inaccurate belief that nunation is a marker for indefiniteness and is analogous to an indefinite article. The lack of a marker for definiteness does not necessarily make a word indefinite; in fact, many definite nouns (proper names) take nunation, as for example in the expression أشهد أن محمداً رسول الله (ʾa?hadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlu llāh: "I witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God."), in which the name Muhammad, a definite noun, is nunated.

Not at all, I'm just interested in learning Arabic.

I kinda knew that much, as in say, the phrase 'rasoolullah.' The word 'rasool' hasn't got a definite marker but nevertheless it is grammatically equivalent to 'the rasool of Allah.' Correct me if I'm wrong.

And I wonder why the tanween is added, then, in cases where it's not used to indicate indefiniteness.

    Nice! And Hebrew as well?

LOL, regarding that, my Arabic teacher was ranting about that today. "The West is sending astronauts to the moon, and we're sitting in our little offices debating the philosophical reasons why the mubtada2 is marfoo3... Goddamit"

And yeah, "Rasool" in "Rasoolullah" is mudhaaf, so it is considered definite because the mudhaaf ilayh (Allaah) is definite.

In general, when you don't have a definite marker, you must have tanween, unless it's mamnoo3 min as-sarf, like the words Hassan and I were discussing. As for why that is the case, I saw a lovely grammar book years ago at our local library that discussed these things -- that reconstructed Arabic grammar, so to speak. I'll look for it sometime, should be an interesting read.

    Very nice  Afro

I remember reading Mihnati ma'al-Qur'an and the author saying something like the Arabs define themselves by Islam and see the glory of the Arabs and their language in Islam. They fear without it they will lose their identity and everything. But this fear is baseless - with the loss of one identity comes the opportunity to build a new one.

They don't owe their achievements to Islam - which if anything have held them back. The great Arab scientists, poets and authors were great individuals and their works surpassed the Qur'an - yet they were never allowed to acknowledge it.

Yes, I'd like to learn Hebrew too. It's very closely-related to Arabic, and shares many words, roots, etc., with it.

Never underestimate the importance of grammar. Indeed, there is quite an unfortunate dearth of understanding in this area among Western people, as evidenced by the fact that so many supposedly literate individuals can't even tell the difference between common words like 'then' and 'than,' and 'me' and 'I.'

Oh, and though the Americans may have sent astronauts to the moon, I bet a good portion of them still don't know that the famous phrase "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" isn't grammatically correct. Tongue

(It is, of course, supposed to be: "One small step for a man...")

1- Immediate debunk for this liar video!
    2- Read the real Quran.

One guy says I have committed a criminal offence:

    FERRAS1977
Please report as infrigmant/ Fasle Holy scriptures. This is a punishable crime by the federal law.

    TheHolyQurqan
I said openly this is NOT the Qur'an. Nor is it pretending to be Qur'an. This is called satire/parody. Just a bit of fun. Lighten up, my friend. It will do Muslims a great deal of good to stop getting offended by everything. Have you heard of Monty Python's "The Life of Brian"? It's a parody/satire on the life of Jesus. Do Christians get all upset about it - no! Why? Because they are mature enough not to feel threatened by a bit of satire. Being able take a joke is healthy.

    FERRAS1977
@TheHolyQurqan However, by doing this for fun, You can mislead many english speakers to believe that these words actually come from the Quran, and you can do more bad than good. The Quran is Holy Scripture and it should be treated as such, and I do fully understand your intentions, simply because You have violated the terms of Youtube infrigimant/ Falsifying holy scriptures, and this is a Criminal offense by the federal law. I pray that people are wise enough to know that this is not the truth

Just in case you need one at your trial Hassan.

Statement of an English speaking non-Muslim person:

"As soon as I read the title 'Sura of the Chicken', I thought, "What's this?". There is no such Sara in the Qur'an. Then I look more carefully. I see it's in the Qurqan. I smile and laugh lightly to myself. I then think. "Humm... what sort of conversation will come from this."

If some one is mislead into thnking this Sura is really in the Qur'an they have only themself to blame because they were to lazy, have no desire to increase their knowledge and to lacking in curiousity to even pick up a Qur'an and read the table of content."

He was serious and only toned down his language slightly when I pointed out that I never claimed it was Qur'an - on the contrary specifically said it was not.

It's odd that the Qur'an asks people to produce a sura like it and Muslims keep gloating that no-one has ever met the challenge - yet when someone does they are threatened with being taken to court?
