So what is correct? That you can beat your wife? Or that you can only tap her with a miswak? This guy obviously favours the heavy–handed approach. Even when I followed Islam many years ago I never understood why a woman wasn’t allowed to backhand her husband if he was acting up.

Of course they do and the Qur'an explains to a wife how she can deal with that. She can come to an amicable agreement and give up some of her rights.
