  • Reza Aslan... Your thoughts about this bloke
     OP - November 10, 2011, 08:49 PM

He confuses me to be honest. I'm not sure which section of the Muslim world he represents. Almost seems like a self appointed spokesman for Islam when the majority of the Islamic world wouldn't pick him to represent them... Well not the religious part of the Islamic world anyway.

What are your views on him?

I'd love to see him tell Muslims that it doesn't matter whether  Mahammad existed or not. Sacred history my arse  Roll Eyes

Someone I know who met him said he's kind of an ass IRL. Meh... whatever. Sounds like just another apologist in a pinstripe suit, from his writings and tv appearances..

I would actually love to see him debate with some Ulema or something, as opposed to just following Sam Harris around and telling him that he just doesnt get the quran is really just a philosophical allegory like Star Wars.
It's kind of a preaching to the choir thing, on the theological side. Most of his audience already doesnt believe Muhammed actually took dictation from Angels.....he should go argue with the people who do.

Anyway, I wish him luck in his efforts to reform islam so that muslims dont believe its true anymore.

Muslim apologist twat who white-washes and sanitizes Islam for middle class american muslim yuppies so that they can feel their stupid religion has a respectable place in US academia. I'll take Anjem Choudhury over this traitorous Iranian any day. At least Chowderfuck is honest.

Yeah right. Real muslims will eat him alive and spit him out like a date seed at iftar. He's just there to help soothe over the identity crisis young liberal muslims ar perpetually in.

    just another sugercoating demagogue

9/11 has created this occupation to promulgate a 'moderate' watered down modernised 21 century islam to show the world there is an islam thats antithethical to bin ladens..... and the likes of reza aslan, tariq ramadan, majid nawaaz are grasping the opportunity with both hands.
  • Re: Reza Aslan... Your thoughts about this bloke

Majid Nawaaz is no Tariq Ramadan.

I'd disagree with Majid Nawaaz on any number of issues, but he is nothing like Ramadan.

I admire Nawaaz for what he has done for taking Islamists on head on.

I don't mind Majid Nawaaz either. I believe he's sincere and combatting the people who need to be fought against. Too bad he's ineffective.

Nawaaz is a former Hizb-ut-Tahrir leader who was imprisoned in Cairo, who basically realised the truth about Islamism, and he takes the Islamists on directly. He's not in denial.

No way can he be bracketed with Ramadan and Aslan.

All 3 are identical in how they are mendacious about the true nature of Islam
  • Re: Reza Aslan... Your thoughts about this bloke
     Reply #14 - November 11, 2011, 10:39 PM

    Nonsense.

Nawaaz does not have his head in the sand about Islamism. Ramadan softly peddles for it, Aslan is in denial, Nawaaz acts against it.

Just because he maintains his belief in Allah, doesn't mean he is the same as the other two.

Thanks for that. It's always nice to know where writers filch their names from. The Droogs in Clockwork Orange are from друг, the Russian for 'friend' etc. etc.

And yes, they are shitty books.

Reza Aslan’s Theory of Religion and Politics

With all due respect to the rarity with which scholars are willing to do what Aslan does, and the man’s many well-reviewed popular books, I see him as a charlatan, at least when it comes to his self-presentation in his media commentaries....
