Those are great shots, I believe those are raw shots and haven't been processed?

    Have you considered using Lightroom?

    Hey GRB,

They are all high quality jpgs. I've not shot in raw yet, I'm not sure what that is? I do have Lightroom and have been using it (when I can be bothered) for correcting saturation/exposure/temperature mostly, and cropping.

If you think the photos above could do with more processing/improvements then let me know what else could be done with them. I really want some good criticisms so I can get better at this.

    @Peru: go to page 76.

RAW files tend to give you much more editing flexibility, because they're what the camera takes pre-conversion to JPG. JPG conversion tends to add a certain amount of sharpening and tends to make its own assumptions on white balance, depending on the camera's settings.

I do like shots 1 and 4. I'd have possibly added a touch of fill light to 4, if that were the original - to bring out the snail a little more - but I digress. How far away were you shooting from?

@Thread: I propose a new rule for DSLR users: each DSLR-taken photo from now on ought to come with exposure data (f stop, shutter speed, ISO) and details of any PP (I appreciate that some people may want to hide EXIF data, because I'm one of them..). What say you?

toor, I was extremely close to all subjects barring the bird. Any closer and my lens would've been touching them.

I guess facebook has stripped off any exif data. I'll upload onto Flickr from now on. I can re-upload those shots onto it too if you want?

Peru, that's brilliant. How on earth did you get so close to the squirrel without it running away?

I've found macro stuff a little tricky, myself - e.g. below, where I was initially aiming for more of the photo to be in focus than the narrow band you see:

f/10, 1/125 second, ISO 400 at 60mm - brightness dialled down slightly in Lightroom, but not enough to rescue the blown-out highlights on the right.

f/10, 1/640 second, ISO 400 at 60mm. Colour balance set to 'Daylight' and blacks upped slightly.

I found that macro required me to stop down more - my best results have generally been at f/16 and f/22 - to get enough depth of field for my intended subject, and to have lots of light on hand to compensate for the narrow aperture.

PS - the main reason I hide EXIF data is because my real name is in the copyright or added data sections. I was just thinking of a quick note under each photo - as above - really, rather than including EXIF data.

toor, that squirrel was extremely friendly and even ran up my leg to grab a nut from my hand Cheesy Most of those shots were in a park were the squirrels are very used to humans and very relaxed around us, even the pigeons were more relaxed.

Same squirrel climbing up my leg (not the easiest of shots to take!)

I've put my shots up (along with some others that came out ok) on Flickr anyway as I need something better than facebook. Unfortunately you are limited to a mere 300mb, and their 'large' photo-size is rather small imo.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/79053225@N03/

I find with macro shots that using live view with manual focus is the easiest way to take shots of still/very slow subjects. In the case of moving subjects like a wasp, I just put on a fast shutter speed, take a million shots and hope to god that at least one comes out ok Wink I have tendency to not look at my results and end up with 15 over-exposed shots Cheesy Doh!

Those are some pretty shots! Love the first one especially.

I tend to use f/5.6 for many of my close-up shots.

Now that's an awesome shot. As is this one:

Yes, manual focus is often the way forwards with macro - nobody likes to sit and focus-hunt, especially with wildlife. I've yet to get used to this whole live view stuff though. Spray or pray is brilliant with moving objects, it's true - are you shooting mainly in Tv?

I found Flickr a lot more usable with a subscription, TBH.

I shoot mainly in Manual, I'm too controlling to use the other two Tongue I may get a subscription one day. We'll see how my needs progress.

I didn't use the term raw for RAW files, I just meant that those files haven't been processed and come directly from the cam.

When it comes to processing, it's usually personal preference. A contrast bump is always nice to see. Since you have the luxury of using a DSLR, noise shouldn't be an issue.

I am sorry to use your picture without permission, but I lean towards sharper contrast, it really brings the picture to life. I've processed this image a bit, took around a minute.

I prefer PS over LR, but for batch processing, LR is the way to go. You'll get an eye for it soon, practise makes perfect. The curve tool is your friend. Smiley

I used to do image manipulation quite a lot when I was younger, but they were more complex than just making a photo clearer/stand out so as a result I have a tendency to over-think things. I'll get used to it after some practice. Thanks for the tips.
