K, went bush again. Me like bush. It's quiet and it smells good.

Pix attached. This is the Mount Nardi - Mount Matheson track, if anyone gives a rat's.

First one is just nifty tree bark what I liked. Dunno what sort of tree it is.

Second one is cool rooty bitz on the track. Yes, there's a track there, although it may not look like it. Class 3 tracks are rough enough to be interesting. Anyway I liked the rooty bitz.

Third one is tree ferns of course. They get pretty big around here. Twenty feet isn't uncommon. The sprouty thing halfway up the tree is a Bird's Nest Fern (they're cool too).

Last one is another really nifty tree. Dunno what sort this one is either, but it's got a young strangler fig growing on it, which gives a cool effect (even though it will ultimately kill the tree).

Hiked 2.5 miles up a nearby butte yesterday, 1430 ft. elevation. It was a great hike, pretty steep much of the way. The weather was perfect and the view from the top was gorgeous. The reddish tree is a madrona, a pacific northwest native.

This is for Nickolaj and the gang who were around when we were talking about the Al-Shehhi tribe. These are some photos I took around the area they historically inhabited. A fun fact about the tribe is that their name allegedly comes from the Arabic word "Shuh" (The plural of their tribe name is Shuhuh) which means stingy. They were supposedly given this name because they were one of the major tribes that refused to pay zakat during the riddah wars. In the town of Diba Al Bay'ah (Diba of the allegiance, so named because it is supposedly where the defeated soldiers of the tribe were forced to give allegiance to the armies of Abu Bakr) there lies a huge graveyard said to contain the dead of one of the largest battles of the riddah wars.

Below you will see an old Shehhi village in the mountains outside of Ras Al Khaimah, a few ancient mosques, and some watch towers meant to keep out invading Portuguese coming from the sea.

Ok all you poor buggers who think the "real world" is made out of concrete and is full of people, this is what it really looks like.

This first lot are from one of the lookouts up on the Springbrook plateau. In the third pic, over at the upper right, you can just see the insane asylum, otherwise known as the Gold Coast, where they put all the people who are too crazy to live in the bush. Best place for them, really.

And just next to the lookout is a creek that drops about 200 metres straight off the edge. Has nice little rock pools, but wasn't thundering at the moment (it's the dry season).

Annnnnnddddd more trees. Moorei trees even. These ones are Antarctic Beech (Nothofagus moorei). They keep growing new trunks from the same huge old base, which can be up to 12,000 years old. Yes, that is 12,000 years. They're a remnant population from Gondwana, when Australia, Antarctica and South America were all joined together around 200 million years ago. They are kinda rare, restricted to mountain tops, and strictly protected these days.

These are taken from the lookout at the end of the track, past the beeches. Looking north east, then east, then south east.

In the centre of the last one, off in the distance, you can just see the peak that is the central plug of the entire caldera. The lookout is on the outer slopes of the same extinct volcano (it's kinda big).

These buggers are at one of the local cafes. They are not scared of people at all. They have figured out that people like them, and will take full advantage of this. If you don't protect your dinner, it turns into their dinner. Cheeky fuckers will walk right up to your coffee and stick their heads in if you let them. Yup, we haz caffeine junkie parrotz.

Took this image inside the Basilica Cistern , the resolution is quite poor.

As it was quite dark, I didn't want to fall into the fish infested water.
