Depends on your needs Prince. Do you just want a standard digital camera or something better? Do you want a camera that allows the flexibility to change the lens in case you get more into photography? Or do you just want a decent camera that is better than a standard digital camera, but without the bulk of a DSLR (as in a cross between the two)?

And what kinda budget do you have?

I want a camera that I can use to take a black-and-white pic of a suitably unremarkable item, a clothes-line or something, preferably with an out-of-focus photogenic minority in the background and an option to automatically add a random platitude in helvetica font.  yes

I don't know about budget, as I have no idea how much cameras cost. Solara's pics look good let's start there.

I have just ordered a Canon EOS 600D, so excited!!!

You can do that with any half-decent camera phone and a photo-editor.

Seeing as you want to carry one around in your pocket, I don't think you really need much other than a decent compact? They are getting very good atm, have a google and see whether you can find anything close to what you want. There's so many of them that I cant really advise you on a decent one.

Go to a camera shop, talk to someone and look at some of their cameras. They usually let you take some shots with them too. That might help narrow it down. Never buy anything from a camera shop however, they are much cheaper online!

Cameras can cost anything from £50 to several hundred to thousands.

lol! I did consider a Nikon, but I like geeky-fiddling around and Canons are better for that. Plus a friend of mine has one, so I can always get her help when needed.
I got a 600D, prefer the 60D but its faar too pricey. I got the 600D at only £500 though, well chuffed at that price!

Geeky fiddling around? I don't know my Canons at all, sadly, but the D5100 is certainly less configurable than the D7000 (which I have), pop-out screen or no pop-out screen.

Canons are made to be highly (and easily) configurable. That was a big reason for me choosing them.

That looks like an awesome Nikon you have there!

Can't find a 600D body below the £530 mark atm, so that's a very good price (assuming not a grey import). Don't forget Canon are running their usual cashback promo this time of year, with £50 off the 600D.

I also think you have the right idea going with a cheaper body. If you're going into a system, invest in glass. The depreciation on bodies is far greater and the feature set is continually improving (especially wrt capturing video).

I remember borrowing a Nikon DLSR, taking pictures, and they all just seemed normal. It was on the default settings and I didn't know what I was supposed to do. Embarrassed

Tmp - with DSLRs you need to spend time understanding how to use them, otherwise you're just using an expensive point-and-shoot Wink I could never take any decent pics with my friends Canon either, but I only had it for a few minutes.

I got the camera from SLR Hut. They have very good reviews online and are megacheap, probably because they ship from America. You do get an extra 20% charge on top of the prices advertised for customs but even after that they're still very cheap. I'm not sure if it qualifies for the cashback from Canon as they only apply to UK based companies, I'm gunna try anyway and see how it goes.

The reason I preferred the 60D is because it is easier to hold due to it being slightly larger. But you're right, the extra money is better spent on lenses.

Good price, but yeah, I don't think it'll qualify for cashback as it's a grey import. Any warranty will be through the retailer, too, since Canon UK won't honour manufacturer warranties on international models.

As for the size, I also find a larger camera more comfortable to hold. You could try it out with the BG-E8 grip and see how you like it, 3rd parties copies of which can be had very cheaply. Extra bonus is that you get portrait controls and double battery capacity.

Nice exposure, toor. Were you using a circular polariser or just bumping the saturation slightly in post?

I'm on an f/8 kick at the moment, so I shot between ISO 100-400.

Looks like a nice piece of glass. I don't know the Nikon lines but that looks like a 70-300 with some sort of image stabiliser? IIRC, the Nikon crop bodies are x1.5 so your reach is something like 450mm? Pretty useful.

    I have a 70-200 2.8 (x1.6 = 320) which has served well for event photography:

After that rally it was getting overcast and I switched to the 17-55 2.8 IS, which is my walkabout. Great for impromptu grabs:

I like the B&W conversion on the first picture, good tonal range.

Yes, I picked up the Sigma a few years ago telling myself I'd upgrade to the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS later on, if I used the range frequently enough to justify the expenditure. I still have it, which provides some indication of how often it's on the camera. Still fun to use, though.

Tokina are capable of making some very nice lenses, imho. I was going to pick up a Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, but took a chance on the Tokina 11-16 2.8 after a lot of pixel-peeping as I wasn't convinced the Canon was worth the extra cash (and I'm a sucker for fast glass). The Tokie is a good value ultra-wide; Very sharp with uniformly good image quality, even wide open.

Also, and the primes bag is a great idea for forcing you to think about composition. Sometimes I won't take anything other than the Canon 50 1.4 because it's so much fun.
