  • Would you say the study of islamic hadiths is a science??
     OP - January 02, 2012, 10:31 AM

A muslim was telling me the other day about the science of hadith and I said you can't put religion and science together! one relies on a systematic body of knowledge mainly dealing with physical evidence that can be tested and observed where as the other is more like historiography (finding a chain of narration and each person must refute his claim by providing two witnesses). He then told me to look up the dictionary for what science is! science of hadith is not science! am I write or wrong?

    What are your thoughts?

You are right.Science of hadith is not a science, infact its complete opposite of it and the tern itself is oxymoron unless the term is used in a different context.

Doesn't this question fall in to the realm of "is history a science"?

To which it can be, but not always, I'm assuming history that does meld with science is history that is verified with archeology (physical evidence).  Not so sure I would ever class the study of hadith as a science unless it was backed up with archeology.

Maybe a social science, but one that is purely at the mercy of sources/chinese whispers.

science of hadith is pseudo-science. It is based upon how trustable the chain of narration is. They can call it science all they want, won’t make it science.

Exactly there is no physical evidence! I think history does fall into science too because physical evidence is looked at (documents, ruins ect) Hadiths however as you have said is like 'Chinese whispers' what makes something with 2 witnesses credible - it's possible the witnesses could have worked together to state something for their own evil benefit! What I also don't understand is how Hadiths are so highly valued in Islam and why they call it science :/

I think that's the only science part to it tbh, the science behind why muslims are able to value something as unreliable as the hadiths, why they hold such stock in chinese whispers.  There is a science behind that question.

Are you using the word science in the natural sense?

Bukhari is a fucking joke & you've gotta be pretty dumb to literally apply it in it's entirety to your life in the 21st century.

When truth is hurled against falsehood, falsehood perishes, for falsehood by its nature is bound to perish.

It's just another case of Muslims molesting the word "science."

The study of Islamic hadiths is just as scientific as Scientology.  Roll Eyes.(Who the hell names a religion after science anyways. Didn't anyone see the irony there)

They only say studying hadiths is a science so the stupid mullahs and muftis can feel smart.  sheikh

In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living

nope.. it would be classified as theology
