  • Your favourite vocalists
     OP - January 03, 2012, 04:31 PM

As the title says.  Also, is there a pattern or trend among your favourites' voices or in the way they sing that you enjoy?

I tend to prefer the ladies here or, in the case of men, a high/counter-tenor.

Rock: Audioslave, Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains, Iron Maiden, Sigur Ros(too high pitched however)

Rap: 2pac(soul), DMX(great voice), Souls of Mischief, Del the Funkee Homosapien, The Pharcyde

list incomplete, I cant think much now

^ I fell in love with The Pharcyde partly because of Tre's 'rap-singing'.

And generally with rap, two of my favourite voices are complete opposites of one another; the smooth Snoop Dogg and the blaring Busta Rhymes.

I wouldnt say "I fell in love..." heheheh, but yeah his singing actually seems logical from a hip hop perspective. Its the type of singing that comes from within naturally. Its unlike singing compared to other genres of music because its not singing in its own right. Its highly spontaneous, comes from within, serves to furnish the beat and compliments the rapping. His voice is nice. And there doesnt seem to be(atleast much) influence from any other genre.

Cept Raggae here at the start (only because of the accent he assumes)

All of them can sound tuneful. They balance the melody of singing and the flow of rap very well in 'Passin' Me By'

I like that take on it, and I agree, it's a unique thing in itself.  Don't see it often.  Ol' Dirty and Busta had a bit of a similar thing going on in the remix for Woo Hah:

I desperately love Nina Simone. Not just for her voice, more for her soul and strength. But her voice does strange things to me. When I listen to Here Comes The Sun, no matter what mood I was in, I'm smiling and recharged. It's my medicine. Literally as effective as a drug. Then listening to Strange Fruit or Dambala, I don't think there is anything more harrowing to hear. It does destroy me. It wasn't my fight and I can never understand her plight, but I feel her rage. I understand that much. I can't name another singer who takes me to so many different emotional places.

Nick Cave and Mike Patton immediately come to mind.

I've always had a soft spot for Busta. ELE is one of the most acomplished and complete hip hop albums ever in my opinion. That was his peak for me.

It's brilliant.  And his breakout with A Tribe Called Quest's Scenario remains my favourite Busta moment:

20 years on, he's doing it live in tribute to ATCQ.  Absolutely incomprehensible but mad energetic:

See I much prefer an earthy contralto. Eartha Kitt or Meshell Ndegeocello sound heaps better to me than Minnie Ripperton does.

    It's a synonym for "oodles".

Hm, with females I don't have that bias as I do with the male vocalists.  I love me some (a lot heaps of) Meshell and Sade and Toni and Anita Tina and Gladys and fuck I'm sure so many others.  Naija posted this in the Sex Music thread and I'll post it here because it's my favourite Sade tune:

And Rachelle Ferrell who spans the whole range:
