  • Youtube or writing?
     OP - January 16, 2012, 09:20 AM

There is a huge ex muslim presence on Youtube, but I am generally oblivious to the youtube movement because I actually don't enjoy youtube links for my information.

To be honest if I click a thread and it starts with a video, I leave the thread because I have no interest in watching the video.  However if that same information is from a written source that I can read, I will stay on the thread and read and be more likely to comment.

I'm not sure why I find youtube links so boring to me.  I think I have a short attention span for visual/spoken things.  Like I can watch a movie sometimes or a programme because they are escapism, but for education or interest I have to read.  I absorb the information better.

Its like the youtube video is the uni lecture.......I drift off in my own head as a voice waffles on and on, and rarely retain the information.  Yet the written stuff, well that is the real study, where I learn those most.

Does anybody else prefer to read for their information and never watches the youtube stuff all over the forum?

    What is your preference?

I only use youtube for music (rarely) and trailers.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I feel like really short info-animations work best on youtube. something short and snappy, not just some random person vloging.

Agree with all of that - that's why I had to vote bit of both.

I often want to watch videos but am pressed for time. Especially when I waste it challenging the veracity of a long standing and well-loved member here. No I don't mean Bahira. lipsrsealed  Wink

For something I want to find out about on my own initiative, I look for writing. Youtube for subjects that seem interesting and I find out someone's posted a vid about, but about which I wouldn't usually actively search for information. The voice of someone with interest in the subject holds my attention better for such subjects.

Like you, I'm out of the loop on the YouTube ex-Muslim scene.  It was school and books for me and I still prefer to read information rather than having to listen to or watch it.

Do you mean like a few of Hass's examples?

    Bit of both.

Its not even that I am pressed for time, I have fuck all to do at the moment, I just prefer to read my information.

Doesn't really matter how captivating or how expressive the person speaking is, I zone out the moment the video starts.  I try to focus, really I do, but it's all noise to me.

Lol I wish I could, would be handy to be able to listen to stuff whilst doing other things, but it is the sound of their voice, no matter how passionate they are, that actually makes me tune out.

Its good so far to know that I am not the only one.  I was starting to think I was a squirrel or something with the worst attention span in history.  Grin

I'm just like you. Which is why I flip out and kill a kitty every time a Muslim friend sends me the one two-hour video that will lead me to the light of Islam.

Never heard masturbation called 'killing a kitty' before.  'choking the chicken' = yes.....'spanking the monkey'  = yes....but 'killing a kitty' = nooooooo.  Grin
