Got a question for JnT. My male cat was licking the kittens today. I cant tell if he's trying to be nice or not. Does he actually intend to eat them?
Edit: He is actually trying to eat them or attack them. He'll be kept away from them from now on.

Just wait till they open their eyes and start wandering around. Then they are quite a handful!  dance

WTF. How can he want to do that? Can any other cat owners or vets here explain this?

I don't have a reason for it, but it's pretty common for animals to eat their young, even the mother. My hamster ate some of her babies. sometimes it can be because of stress etc..

It's normal male cat instinct. The kittens aren't his, he wants to be dominant so why allow kittens from another cat into his 'pride'. Female cats go back into heat soon after giving birth so they will kill the kitties and then mate with the female.

Mine is spayed however, but instincts will still be there. There are some lovely stories of male cats adopting other kittens though :-) Not mine sadly.

He'll stop when they get bigger. Then he'll bully them for dominance instead ;-)

No... He is "helping" lol.  If mama is okay with him doing that, he is just welcoming
them into the family, unless he is getting rough or aggressive with them.  It probably
wouldnt hurt to only let him around them when supervised by you or your sig/other,
until they are a bit older and can hold their own.  He may also see them as toys
for a while (that is normal too).

He seems to be harming them now I think. He dragged one out of the nest. Mum just gets stressful, hasn't told him off though.

what is flopsy's and the male cat's normal relationship like?

yeah, be on the safe side, and keep him away for a while
until they are bigger and eyes open, etc.

They don't really have a relationship. Snarf is playful, she is the opposite and hisses at him when he tries to play with her. They've fought on a few occasions but normally they just stay out of each others way. I try to play games that involves both cats.

I'm hoping Snarf will get a playmate out of this litter. He does seem to like playing with a cat across the street. I think he needs a friend, or I've just got him completely wrong.

I have another issue. I'm moving houses soon and the kittens will be 2.5 weeks old then. Are they going to be OK being removed from the nest? Or will mum just get very stressed?

Maybe snarf was trying to snag a kitten for his own lol.  Its actually not uncommon
for a male cat to take a kitten under his "paw" so to speak.  My niece's cat, Sabbath,
is a HUGE adult black male cat (fixed), and she rescued a kitten a few months ago,
and he makes the kitten snuggle in his tummy, wraps his paws around her, and
loves on her ALL the time lol.

Does he take the same kitten every time?

Also, yeah the move is probably gonna stress her out.  But also consider a cat
in the wild will move her kittens occasionally to a different nest.

I have a cat with serious insecurities, and when I moved, and drove cross country,
I had a talk with him, while snuggling, ensuring he knew he could trust me.

But in your case, what i would suggest is not moving them until you have everything
moved out  (except that dresser).  Make a quiet, dark area in your new place for them,
put blankets or towels with yours and her scent on it in the new nest.  Put all of them
in a large enough box, close the lid so its kinda dark.  And talk to her as you move them
in the car so she knoiws you are there with her.  Or keep the box on your lap or sitting
next to you as you drive to the new place and let her know you are there, reassuring her.

When you get to your new place with the new nest (or put the stuff back in the drawer
they were in, in the first place, and leave them alone for a couple of hours to let her
get used to tne new place.  Cats are paradoxical mysteries, they can be so fragile, and
yet so resciliant lol.  She and the babies will bounce back to resume the greedy gulping
soon lol.  let us know how it goes.  *hugz*

No idea. Not paid enough attention and he hasn't had enough attempts anyway. He usually just has a small peek while he walks by.

The drawer isn't coming with us, it's not ours. She'll have to get a new nest, but I'll make sure the clothes in that drawer during that week are moved over to the new nest. That way it'll have a similar smell.

Got some news on the kittens: the black ones have already started opening their eyes! They seem slightly more mature than the white ones (ever so slightly, but they have slightly bigger fur which might be why). dance

    Update on teh kittehz

We moved into the new house this Thursday. As unplanned as I bloody am, I realised at the last minute that Flopsy and kittens cant all fit in the cat carrier :( So they had to be separated unfortunately. The journey wasn't very long thankfully and the kittens were very quite for the duration of it (they just fell asleep!). Flopsy kept making sad noises whenever I called her name. It was really heart-breaking  Cry

Snarf however managed to break out of his carrier when in the taxi while I was fetching Flopsy from the house. Luckily this was still outside our previous house. I tried to get him but he managed to escape and ran away into the neighbours garden. Stupid cat. I had to leave him as there was no way he was coming back at that time. My bf went back in the morning and he was sat there in the garden waiting for us.

I spent that night looking after Flopsy and helping her adjust. She was very meowy and freaked out. I put her in a small room with familiar toys and her kittens. She's settled in now though, after lots of stroking and cat treats! Still not eating much though (apart from treats which she gobbles down!).

When my bf brought Snarf he just continued to cause more trouble!! He was a lot more freaked out then Flopsy (this is his first time being moved like this unlike Flopsy, so makes sense I suppose). Kept meowing very loudly, and then hid behind the washing machine! Tom managed to free him and brought him to the bedroom, then he hid under the bed. I've stayed with him a lot and kept him calm. He came out eventually and is being more friendly now. He's not settling in as well as Flopsy, he is a lot more nervous but he is getting there now. Being a lot more adventurous today Smiley Getting back to his normal self slowly. He's also eating a lot better than Flopsy.

    And teh big newz

I think I've misjudged Snarf. He was grooming the kittens today!! Actually licking them down and cleaning up their bottoms! He bites their neck sometimes which I mistook for aggression before, but I think he was just holding them down, as he then carried on licking them. He seems to be getting attached to them. He's always lying next to the box, and getting in the box whenever Flopsy leaves it Smiley Guess he didn't mean any harm after all!

    And some fotoz

Kittens are trying to leave the box now!

They will be 3 weeks old this coming Monday Smiley

    Quick update on kitty health
All cats seem very healthy. I've only noticed a problem with one of the black and white cats. Its eyes seem a bit funny, like it still is in the process of opening them, looks like its recovering from two black eyes (which it isn't). Its eyes make it look permanently depressed. Hopefully they'll be ok. It's still feeding fine. Aside from this, they are all ok! Smiley
