    Depends on which 'type' of Pakistani you speak to I suppose. The more 'liberal' corrupt feudal PPP type are indeed scared of that. Some of the more religious deobandi types (regardless of their ethnicity) would love a separate Pashtun region because it then gives the whole "hijra (migration) and return with jihad" scenario against sufi barelvi punjab  whistling2 Others see it as weakening Pakistan---the so called guardian of the ummah with its nukes, lulz.

    I think it's an exaggeration to say the government was "hand-picked" given that there was an electoral process. If you want to say the range of candidates was artificially limited that's supportable, but it's not quite the same thing.

    Also, you can't blame all the corruption in the electoral process on the US/NATO when you have things like this:

    Well it isn't. grin12 As an analogy, say I form a "political party" in Australia and have policies that include buggering kangaroos, shooting aborigines, and making consumption of Vegemite compulsory.     Yes, I get that the Taliban is banned from participating in elections. That's just the Taliban. Yes, I get that the US gives blow jobs to nasty people, because the only people with power in Afghanistan are nasty (Taliban or otherwise). I still think you're exaggerating your point.

    I don't think it's quite that simple either, although I agree that probably plays a part at times. Mind you, politicians tend not to care much about anyone who doesn't affect their chances of re-election, regardless of which ethnic group they come from.

    Its not just the Taliban though, its anyone who doesn't like NATO, Islamist or secular. Imagine if a secular leader did come to power and he forced NATO to leave, they'd probably arm the Taliban to oust him.     There'd be a lot less violence for once. That's a good starting point, less people killed  Tongue I don't know if its the same for the rest of the world, but historically in the Islamic world violence breeds extremism, it backs people into a corner and makes things appear to be black and white. Afghanistan won't become liberal overnight or even in a few years but it happened once. And if there's any negotiations that need to be made then Iran and Pakistan must help Karzai negotiate with the Taliban, they're the ones who will have to live with whatever Afghanistan turns out to be and both have backed militias in the past and still do.

    TBH I'm not sure they would object to being forced to leave. I don't think you'd have to do much forcing at all. Not sure how the situation is viewed inside Pakistan, but really nobody in the west wants to colonise bloody Afghanistan. They want to get the fuck out. They just want to get the fuck out without it going straight back to exactly what it was before, because that was trouble too.

    If a secular leader who didn't give a shit about motherfukn jihad got into power, my bet is NATO would buy him a case of beer and split. Tongue

    See here's the thing: the whole idea of stomping around in Afghanistan was to stop crazy fuckers blowing shit up in our cities. This means finding replacement crazy fuckers who are content with not blowing things up, or at the very least with blowing each other up, and making sure they are stable enough to not fall prey to the first lot of crazy fuckers as soon as our backs are turned.

    So yeah, bring on your theoretical secular leader and no worries.

    well we can only hope that Afghanistan does not fall back into talibans influence after nato leaves.People of Afghanistan deserve better.We must also not forget that everyday brave afghan soldiers and policemen wake up and do their dangerous jobs even though the   lives of their families are threatened by taliban.

    Earlier on there was talk of the IRA. To the British government they were terrorists, acts they committed were criminal requiring the police to take action. I think I am right that in Europe any terrorist action was seen as a criminal matter not a military matter. Personally think that the invasion of Afghanistan was illegal. But hey ho might is right.
