    Thoughts?

Fireman Sam creator detained at airport for veil comment at security gate

A retired fireman, and creator of the popular children's character, Fireman Sam, was detained at an airport for questioning why a veiled woman was not checked by security.

By Jason Lewis, Investigations Editor7:30AM GMT 26 Feb 2012

As David Jones arrived at the security gates at Gatwick airport, he was looking forward to getting through swiftly so he could enjoy lunch with his daughters before their flight.

Placing his belongings, including a scarf, into a tray to pass through the X-ray scanner he spotted a Muslim woman in hijab pass through the area without showing her face.

In a light-hearted aside to a security official who had been assisting him, he said: “If I was wearing this scarf over my face, I wonder what would happen.”

The quip proved to be a mistake. After passing through the gates, he was confronted by staff and accused of racism.

If she was wearing a hijab her face would be uncovered. Surely they mean she was wearing a burqa or niqab.

My thoughts? I think the people responsible for detaining this man should be arrested, charged with false imprisonment, and jailed themselves. I have zero sympathy for petty tyrants and idiots who abuse power granted to them by the state-- every single one who does should be subject to severe criminal penalties. There are a lot of cops, prosecutors, regulators, legislators, and judges who belong in prison.

I hate the phrase 'political correctness gone mad' because more often than not its used by reactionaries to try and dismiss genuine issues or exaggerate or caricature things to make a rhetorical point. But I think it kind of applies to this situation, if it is accurate as its described.

Stuff like this adds to mistrust in society too.

Not only is this unjust, but plain ridiculous. Like something from a comedy film.
Even if the remark was racist - are racist remarks illegal in the UK? Do they warrant an arrest, for real?

Have you heard the good news? There is no God!

The general public needs re-educating on the term 'racist'.

So you think state authorities or their adjuncts are justified in detaining people for saying "dicky" things?

It doesn't say they detained him, just that some staff members confronted him.

That's detention. He claims he was delayed over an hour. If his description was accurate it was most certainly unjustified detention.

Not just my opinion, but the standard for American (dunno about British) law as well-- if a police officer or similarly-empowered government official tells you that you are not free to leave, then you are, by definition, detained.

The more I think of this, if the details he recounts are accurate, the more Orwellian and disturbing it seems.

Will be interesting to see if this story goes further or more details emerge. Would be good if we could hear the other side of the story from the officials.
