  • Never mind the bollocks.
     OP - February 28, 2012, 08:23 PM

In case anyone was either still worrying about degenerating Y chromosomes, or still feeling superior about them, depending on your sex, it seems there may not be a problem after all. parrot

The human Y chromosome is here to stay

    Quote
The male sex-determining chromosome has lost only one gene in 25 million years.

Men can breathe a sigh of relief: their sex-determining chromosomes aren't going anywhere. A study of human and rhesus monkey Y chromosomes questions the notion that the Y is steadily shedding genes and is doomed to degenerate.

In fact, the version of the Y chromosome that every human male carries around has lost just a single gene in the 25 million years since humans and rhesus macaques shared a common ancestor.

"I think it should finally put an end to the speculation about the demise of the Y. Twenty-five million years is a big chunk of the history of the Y," says Jennifer Hughes, a geneticist at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She and colleague David Page led the study, which is published online today in Nature.

    <snip>

To gaze even further back into the history of the Y, Hughes and her team decoded the Y chromosome of the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), which has a common ancestor with humans and chimps that lived around 25 million years ago. Macaques are promiscuous, and Hughes expected to see that the macaque Y had dropped some genes and duplicated others involved in making sperm.

"It couldn't have been more different," she says. The macaque Y contained just one gene that humans have lost, and that gene resides on a particularly unstable portion of the Y. The human Y has grown much longer than the macaque's, but the genes were mostly the same.

Oh I thought they were plausible, but I never worried about it. It would hardly be likely to affect any of us, and other mammalian species have lost the Y chromosome anyway without any apparent ill effects. They just use a different chromosome to do the same job.

Another snippet from the same article:

    Quote
Some mammals, including mole voles and spiny rats, have lost their Ys already, and sex-determining genes have emerged on other chromosomes.

That should save a lot of stress. Grin

Google something like "Y chromosome degeneration" or "Y chromosome mutation" if you want to read about the original kerfuffle.

Ok, short version for those who never caught up with the debacle. Does anyone remember all that stuff about females being the first sex, and how the Y was far stronger and more stable, and the Y being only a buggered X, and how it was all going to Hell in a handbasket?

Turns out that it's not a problem. So there. Tongue

Proof of this is in the fact that mitochondrial Eve lived about 60,000 years before Y-DNA Adam

Just means that men evolve faster and are therefore evolutionarily superior.

I'll go ahead and claim that the only people who were/are worried/concerned about the "y chromosome degeneration" are:

1: Men who feel inferior/inadequate/threatened about male-ness so need to play "oppression olympics" with women.
2: Women who feel inferior/inadequate/incapable of self-determined behaviour, so need to hang on to some biological determinism fantasy about being superior/longer-lasting.

Neither camp is very exciting, TBH.

     Reply #16 - February 28, 2012, 09:33 PM

Well the original report wasn't crap as such. It was just another paper about genetics, and it did indicate that there might be a problem with degeneration of the Y. Nothing that would affect our species on any time scale we might personally care about, but interesting enough in its own right.

Since species are constantly mutating and evolving anyway, things like this shouldn't really flabbergast anyone. X and Y chromosomes are just the standard mammalian way of doing sex determination, but there are other ways of doing it and not all mammals use X and Y.

ETA: Also, technically the Y is just a mutated X, but then all human chromosomes are just mutated fish chromosomes anyway.
