Republican and Democrat have changed meanings since the 1964 Civil Rights Act though.  Southern Democrats were actually pretty fucking racist and huge proponents of Jim Crow laws.  When Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat, pushed for the Civil Rights Act, it caused rifts in both parties and what you would call Democrats today gathered around promoting the Act, and what you would normally think of Republicans were against it. Everyone then realigned themselves and switched parties. Republicans then picked up the "Southern Strategy" of implicate racism and conservativism that Southern Democrats had been using for years.

These people have not gotten over the previous american civil war and it seems like glenn beck just won't be happy until there is another one. Telling people to arm themselves is just asking for another civil war. Get the fuck over it racists, slave owners LOST. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SEVEN YEARS AGO. Really, isn't it time to let that go already??

The pseudo Civil War white supremesy issue isn't some kind of permanent fixture of the Republican party. It was a conscious and intended strategy in order to win political power when whites were the majority.  As the demographics change and the appeal of the "southern strategy" fades you'll see the Republican party ditch it very quickly.  I would bet in 10 years the politics of crazy that the Republicans have been pushing will be a thing of the past, because it no longer wins.

It's pretty much why African Americans, even Evangelical African Americans are Democrats in spite of African Americans Evangelicals being generally against same sex marriage, abortion, and generally the perfect fit for the religious right wing.   0% of African Americans across the whole country voted Republican in the presidential race.

Possibly. But I've been personally observing US politics since I was in my late teens and that was during the first Bush's era, and it seems that race has become a bigger issue, and a substitute for the economically unfair policies that are actually being espoused by the funders and strategists at the top. How do you get poor whites to vote in the interest of rich people? Play on the poor whites' fear of blacks/mexicans/muslims. In America, race is a substitute for economic class, and the Republicans had successfully convinced a lot of people, mostly white that they are ideologically closer to the wealthy, tax-evading 1% (of any race) than to other poor and middle class people (of any race other than white).

I think you're right.  If you have a free 20 minutes or so you should read

    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/matt-taibbi-on-the-tea-party-20100928

and you'll see that you're on the same plane as a writer for a major publication.  The problem is that there just isn't enough angry white guys in America anymore who are afraid of the dark swathy hordes.  The only other way to retain power is to try some very undemocratic methods.  You see some of it with this voter suppression voter ID laws, but even so it will take a lot more to push the eligible electorate towards white older males.  Republicans were counting on minorities not voting as much as they in 2008 but minorities came out in droves.  Republicans simply have to widen their tent to stay relevent, and that means abandoning their racist, browns are lazy and stealing our jobs, Blacks are lazy and want welfare, Asians are stealing our jobs etc.  That has to be ditched.  They can still retain their small government mantra but they will have to ditch their racist strategies.  On a side note they will have to soften their religious right connections too.  Have religious people scream about the evils of society leads to embarrassing God wants rape babies incidents.  Gay marriage is here to stay and the religious right will have to swallow that or becomes irrelevant.  It puts them in a pickle because if your a poor white guy, who are you going to vote for? The party that's for cutting your Social Security, welfare, and unemployment benefits and giving tax cuts to some rich white guy who you'll never see? The racist strategy is the only thing holding these guys in the Republican party.

BTW, saw this on my fb feed, thought it was interesting. Within each state, there is actually a lot of variety, even this map doesn't come close. E.g.: In Minnesota, one district re-elected the vile, homophobic teabagger Michelle Bachman while the state voted in favour of same sex marriage.

Yeah seen that one already. TBH I got bored with it well before the end. What I find more interesting is the GOP's top pundits and public representatives spouting insane gibberish.

I hadn't watched all the debates between Romney and Obama so I'd missed this bit before today.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/national-affairs/the-four-punches-that-knocked-out-romney-20121023

    Quote
    2) A Gaffe of Palinesque Proportions

Needling Romney as though he's a child who sees the U.S. Navy like a game of Battleship was devastating. And the president's one-liner underscored the damning ignorance Romney had displayed earlier in the debate.

Discussing Syria, Romney sought to paint the Assad regime as a proxy for Iran. Fair enough. But then he completely bollixed his Middle East geography. "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world," he said, "It's their route to the sea."

For fuck's sake. It's called the Persian Gulf because it runs along the coastline of Persia — aka, Iran. And while we're at it, Syria and Iran don't even share a border — there's a little country called Iraq in the middle. So even if Iran were landlocked, Syria still wouldn't provide any "route to the sea."

This was Romney's most jaw-dropping gaffe of all three debates, and it is all but disqualifying.

So this twit is supposed to be fit to lead the US on the world stage? He was beating his chest about strong leadership in the Middle East, and he doesn't even know the first thing about the area. Cheesy

    excerpt from:
What’s Up with White Women? They Voted for Romney, Too

    Quote
Why did so many white women vote for Romney despite his shift to the right on women’s issues during the G.O.P. primaries? One way to tackle this question is to ask why so many white men voted for him. Surely, many of the same factors that motivated white male Romney supporters played into the decision-making of white female Romney supporters. After all, in many cases, the members of the two groups are married to each other, and are shaped by the same cultural and economic environment. (To be clear, I am not suggesting that white women vote Republican because their husbands do. Women make up their own minds.)

Without much doubt, attitudes about race—and even outright racism—played a role, although one that is hard to quantify. But it’s far from the only thing. Income is important. On average, white men and women tend to be richer than non-whites, and voting Republican is strongly correlated with income. (In families that made less than a hundred thousand dollars a year, Obama won by eight points. In families that made more than a hundred thousand dollars a year, Romney won by ten points.) Age is another factor. Whites, on average, tend to be older than non-whites, and older people (male and female) tend to vote Republican in greater numbers. Religion is also part of the story. Most white women, like most white men, are churchgoing Christians, a group that is strongly Republican—especially evangelicals, who voted for Romney by almost four to one. Then there is ideology. Just as there are conservative men, there are conservative women.
