OK, my serious answer, not just political correspondents that I fancy*, is Kathryn Bigelow, movie director and first woman to win the Oscar for best director for Hurt Locker.

    The Williams sisters.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zol5gXnhbs

My heart bursts with love and respect for these two women. If you want a role model, look no further than the family who fought their way from rock bottom to the top of the world and enjoyed all the success that came with it. Female, black, underprivilaged - the Williams sisters went on to reign supreme, dominating women's tennis, changing the face of the sport and being all-round brilliant role models on and off the court with an incredible rags to riches story, incredible souls, incredible beauty inside and out.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Truth be told even young muslim girls are only ever really taught about the wives of the prophet and his buddys, so the only role model they are getting is how to be a strong wife for your more worthwhile husband.

From a historical perspective there are quite a few strong female leaders from MENA, all pre-Islamic of course:

Kahina: She is like the Boadecia of the Maghreb, led the Berber resistance against the original Arab invasion.

Zenobia: Led a revolt against Rome and became a Queen of Syria

Dido: Phoenician Queen who founded the city of Carthage in Tunisia.

There is a lot of myth associated with these characters and who knows how much of their lives are really historical or mythical. But then the same could be said of the wives of the Prophet....

Maybe not mine, not either of them.  Grin

Although I'd have to say, I respect my step mother for working hard to financially support 3 children who weren't even her own.  She may have dressed us in rags but she dressed us, and she may have forced us to eat food we never liked (something she never did with her own kids) but thanks to that I'm pretty open to tasting most food once.  And maybe is she hadn't tried to squish me so much as a child I wouldn't be the rebellious person that I am now.

So for that, thanks *****, you helped make me some of the things I am today, and not all of those things are bad.

I love the story of Kahina.  I seriously still want to write a historical fiction novel about her.  Her legend still needs to be more widely known.

    Thanks for the other 2.

I have lots of reading to do with all of these role models.   dance
