Ann Dowling

Professor Dame Ann Patricia Dowling, DBE, FRS, FREng is a British mechanical engineer who specialises in combustion, acoustics and vibration. She is currently Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge[1], where she was the first female professor in 1998.[2]
Dowling was born 15 July 1952.[3]
Her career has been at University of Cambridge starting as a research fellow in 1977[3] but she has held visiting posts at MIT (Jerome C Hunsaker Visiting Professor, 1999) and at Caltech (Moore Distinguished Scholar 2001). She is currently Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge[1], where she was the first female professor in 1998.[4]
On 3 February 2012, the oil company BP announced that Dowling is to become a non-executive director with immediate effect.
She recently won the UKRC's Women of Outstanding Achievement Awards.
The award recognises women who are an inspiration to others.
The UKRC also helps with the issue of under-representation of women in science/engineering/tech areas
