  • Facebook Timeline
     OP - May 23, 2012, 10:13 AM

Ok, let me start by saying that I hate change and this thing sucks.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way: I'm apparently one of the few whose profile hasn't been switched to Timeline (yet) but apparently it's inevitable because screw your freedom of choosing what kind of profile you want, right? My main problem with facebook has always been privacy. I am fully aware that whatever I've shared there is theirs forever and there's nothing I can do about it.

Because of the nature of the content of my profile (pictures, "religious leanings") I'm pretty paranoid about who I add as a friend, and who has access to what. So probably once a week I'd go through all my privacy settings and check them one by one. It would be a disaster for me if a relative or a real-life acquaintance took a look at it.

This Timeline thing, though, looks like the plague to me. I found this http://www.pcworld.com/article/249019/facebook_timeline_privacy_tips_lock_down_your_profile.html

and man, does it sound like a lot of work :/ I guess the easiest solution for me would to delete my account. But I don't want that because it keeps me in touch with people I'm too lazy to email Tongue And it's kinda useful when it comes to music news, concerts, etc. So anyway, given what I know now, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to switch vountarily to Timeline RIGHT NOW and spend some time going over privacy settings, instead of having it take me by surprise, maybe at a time where I have no internet access? Of course, I'm sure that's what Fecesbook wants me to do!

Are you using Timeline? What was your experience with it?

I switched to timeline the moment I found out about it.

Facebook resets the privacy settings every time they update. It doesn't have anything to do with timeline per se. Changing them is not time consuming. Just go to 'Privacy Settings' and click on 'Friends' for whatever you want to hide from people not on your friends list. You can then go to your profile, press on the gear logo on the top right, press 'View As...', and see how it appears to the public.

So it's not really different from the settings in the classic profile? Because the guy who wrote that article made it sounds more complicated. I guess I'll have to do it, then.

I've got timeline. I hated it at first. but now it's just midlly irritating. If it's the privacy thing you're worried about (and not the actual weirdness of the timeline itself, which I still don't get), you can totally change your privacy settings in like 5 minutes so that non-friends only see your display picture and your cover photo. Smiley So that isn't a problem. Actually, I think the privacy settings have gotten better. I remember from like 3 years ago, it was so hard to see who you had shared posts with, but now there's a little tool-icon-thing next to each post that, if you hover over it, tells you who you've shared it with. Smiley

You can hide things from timeline even for yourself and your friends. It's basically like deleting your posts. Not really a privacy issue.

Why is Facebook even so popular? All my friends, family and classmates use it, I hate Facebook. I would never tell a random person who asks me what school I went to/go to, where I was born and live, everything I like and dislike, what political party I support, my religion, who my friends are etc... Forget about putting all of that stuff on a Facebook server somewhere. What happened to the days when people fought to make sure that type of information safe?

I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

I wouldn't bother with it if i were you. I upgraded and it made it really hard to friggin fix all the privacy settings how I wanted them.

At first it put a map showing the entire world exactly where I lived!  mysmilie_977 It took me a while to work out how to remove that.

Also, I still have not worked out how to make the "cover photos" private. The "cover photo" is this long banner that you choose to go behind your main profile pic and it stretches horizontally right across the screen. Anyway, I cannot work out how to make those private. Right now anybody could go ther and see all the cover photos I have ever chosen and also see all the comments that people have written about my cover photos.

I am sure it can be done, but I am done with fiddling with the settings. It takes forever.

Plus once you upgrade to the timeline, it seems like there is no way to go back to the old style. At least i cannot work out how....

It's unfortunately not as easy as not bothering with it. All the facebook profiles will be switched to Timeline eventually, whether we like it or not.

I honestly don't see why everyone is hating on timeline. It has its pros and cons, but overall I don't think it's bad.

I dont like the narcissism of it. I have absolutely no desire to 'tell my story'.
Facebook isnt about me. It is about stalking other people.

I think it doesn't use space efficiently, but besides that, it's a pretty decent design, and serves the purpose Facebook is meant to serve.

I don't understand how the columns work in timeline. Why is some stuff on the left and some on the right? How does the computer decide where to put what? :S

I hate facebook, I deactivated it for a few months but reactivated it the other week to help a friend out with her art competition (you have to "like her artwork") and my profile hasn't yet been changed to Timeline.

I really don't like the layout of it, and it does seem to show a bit more about you than what the normal profile does. I'm massively paranoid about privacy as I don't want my parents to see that I have FB otherwise they'll start demanding to look at my profile; I never even have a clear picture of myself for the DP! When FB made it so everyone could see your DP that infuriated me too (you used to be able to keep it private).

From the few years I've had it, everytime they change the profile layouts privacy seems to get worse.

I'll probably get rid of it when Timeline becomes compulsory for everyone.

You have no choice. Facebook is now forcing mobile authentication. You can't access your account or deactivate your account unless you provide them with your number. They seem to be slowly rolling this out to users. I did a google about this a while back when I got the message, seems like quite a few people have encountered it and couldn't do anything about it.

It's so wrong! I don't know if it's possible to make an official complaint about this to Ofcom or something? They shouldn't be allowed to do this.
