  • Which generation?
     OP - May 24, 2012, 08:36 AM

Folks. A couple of days ago my seventeen year old daughter asked me whether or not at her age I was into grunge metal, indie or heavy metal etc? I told her that I come from a generation where at the time the music above was associated with "coconuts" and the type of music that we used to listen to was RnB, New Jack Swing, Hip Hop, Rave/Techno, Bhangra, Dance Hall and if we pushed the boat out a bit Acid Jazz.

My daughter gave me a stare of sheer indignation and said:

"Abu, so basically you used to listen to "TP" music!"

I'm not up to scratch on what the youngsters listen to these days. Apart from the moments that I hear a loud racket from the kids room, which sounds Japanese. I'm sure my daughter can't understand what it said in those lyrics but she assures me that it make good listening.

My kids are also into those peculiar slasher movies like "SAW" and similar films. To which she also asked me about the movies I was into at her age.

I told her that there was a genre of films that I used to watch in my late teens called "Hoodie films". Titles such as New Jack City, Boyz n da hood and Juice come to mind. Again the eyes rolled as though I had made some sort of error in judgement. But there you are. They were the movies and songs for my generation at the time.

So the question is, what movies and music genres defined your generation? If you have kids, do they also look at you in such a disapproving manner?

    Spacetoon!!!

OMG I remember Spacetoon! I watched it a  few months ago too, not that I understand a word they were saying. Tongue

    Anyway, Omaar:

    1. ARTHUR THE AARDVARK OMG is suchhhh an amazing tv show and honestly if you have toddlers, they should be watching Arthur. It teaches good morals.

    2. Timothy Goes to School

    3. Peep in the Big Wide World. This show was about exploring. It was really nice.

    4. I'm guessing Gossip Girl and stuff, but I don't like dramas so I'm gonna continue with my kid's list <3

    5. That show, Bear in the Big Blue House. SUCKED, but I watched it.

    6. OMG THAT SHOW WITH THE GIRL DRESSED AS A CLOWN! Does anybody remember the name? The Big Comfy Couch, I thinkkkk. It was AWESOME!!

    7. Stupid Cartoon Network shows, like PowerPuff Girls and the one with 5 kids who solved mysteries. Cartoon Network shows lack morality.

I'm gonna come back from school and tell you more Tongue And I'll post their theme songs. Tongue Here's a sneak peek of how exciting that's gonna be:

     Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I feel your pain.  Although thankfully I'm 'trendy' enough for my kids to not feel my currrent music tastes are shameful to them.

As a kid I was raised on bob marley and pink floyd etc, wasn't really into music though, not until I was about 16 did I really start to buy music and seek it out and that was like you, only I hated dancehall at the time.  Ragamuffin i was not Grin  I was a JUNGLE generation teen.

Designer clothes, sunglasses in club to hide ecstasy eyes, and jungle music thrumming through my entire body.

My childhood was He-man, shera, thundercats, wonder woman, watching the superman movies and trying to balance my body on chairs with a tea towel as a cape so i could fly too.

Breakdancing to the film breakdance and trying to do Turbo and Ozone's moves and failing miserably with a rag/bandana tied on my head Grin

Kinghtrider, the A team, the original battlestar galactica, chips, tron.  MONKEY MAGIC....never could make up my mind if buddha was a girl or boy back then.

Then the RnB and jungle phase.

Also boyz in the hood and all those gang banging movies for me too .  Cheesy

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

About hip hop, RnB and techno vs metal and indie rock, I don't think it is a generation thing. At least in France, there is a WAR out there between hiphopers and metalhead finmad.

The kids don't have an issue with my trend. They reckon it's the wrong sort of trend. I always remind my kids that we are reasonably young in comparison to the parents of their friends. Some of which are the same age as my parents!

As a kid I liked Duran Duran and in the background a fan of George Michael. I didn't buy music till I was 16 and kept up with the charts. I also preferred to buy from independent record shops. It's a shame that there aren't many around now. As a kid I had to contend with waiting for the chart countdown on Sunday to record the songs and then try to fade out the DJ towards the end of the song.

Speaking of dancehall and ragamuffin. Remember that bigot Shabba Ranks, I wonder what happened to him?

Being a good Muslim, I was never into drugs or dancing in clubs etc. Although I had a weakness for designer clothes which I've not quite grown out of yet. Do you remember the brand "Naff Naff"? I don't think it was designer, it was popular though.

Yep, remember all of those cartoons. My favourite was Dungeons and Dragons. The little dungeon master used to annoy me with his riddles. For some reason, I recall that once films like Superman premiered on the TV. They never stopped broadcasting them every xmas!

Ah yes. I wanted the track suit and the Addidas trainers. I wanted the "Jheri curl" back then. Although as a nine year old in 1983 it would have looked silly. By the time I was old enough, it was way out of fashion.

Most of these serials have been repeated on Sky and Cable some time or another. I started watching Knightrider and the A Team on one of the channels once and just stopped realising how crap it was. Also watching them again would have spoiled the nostalgia. As a kid I could never work out why my parents wanted to watch the seven-o-clock news on channel four rather than such a brilliant show like the A Team! I now see where my parents were coming from when my missus and me want to watch the news and the kids look on in outrage as to how and why the Disney channel loses out.

I can relate to all of this, got married a day before my 30th birthday so my daughter is only 9 now but she is into whatever is trending right now, such as selena gomez and the Disney kids. To fit in in my teenage years I also listened to R&B and loved movies such as NJC, Boyz in the Hood, Boomerang etc I however especially loved the spoof of Boyz in the hood, "Don't be a menace to south central while drinking you juice in the hood THought them Wayans brothers were the bomb.... aaaah to be young again  Cry
When I was young I wanted to be older now that I am nearing the big 40, I am wanting my youth back again.

Well i grown up with the rock music genre. I love listening to bands like papa roach, metalica and many others of that fact. I do at times get looked upon being weird for being into this but i think for me it is due to it being odd for an asian person as it doesn't appear to me a norm compared asian people like rap music and other main stream genres.
