     OP - May 27, 2012, 01:12 AM

    Hi everyone!

So this is a thread to discuss porn philosophically. So please keep it clean folks. Thank you! Smiley

K, so I think porn is bad. I don't know why. It's immoral though.

Anyway, so I figure, most people here think it's okay because of consent, but I was wondering, does anybody know the implications of widespread porn use socially and emotionally? I just find it hard to believe that it doesn't affect a person psychologically and change their mindset. And if it does so negatively, shouldn't it be considered immoral regardless of consent? As in, I don't think consent should determine whether something is immoral or not, eg euthanasia....but I'm not really sure. Tongue

I also don't really know anything about the porn industry, but what motivates people to become porn stars?

And what's everyone here's 'philosophical' view on pornography?

Kay, thanks!!! Smiley Smiley And remember, no matter what you type, I'll be here judging! Tongue Hahaha. j/k

    Why?

I told you I don't know why, I don't reason my way to morality. It just seems obvious to me. I guess it's like asking someone why they're a utilitarian, it's just obvious that it's best to do what leads to the most good.

So you don't know anything about porn or the porn industry yet you think it's immoral and have no idea why?

Pretty much. yes Presumably this thread is going to change my views.....

Now tell me your views, you pwomised! Tongue

You could use the same reasoning to say that doughnuts are immoral. Roll Eyes

I'm using my innate sense of morality (or conditioned, if you want to put it that way). How do you (personally) determine if something is moral or immoral? Are you operating on your common sense telling you that eating doughnuts isn't immoral? Cuz that's exactly what I'm doing with porn....

Probably. But I'm genuinely curious about what you think cuz I think you're smart and articulate. yes

Ok, so try breaking it down a bit.

Are you still at the "boys are icky" stage?

Are you just more or less repeating what you have been taught about attitudes to sex?

Do you find the whole idea of sex distasteful, and therefore extend that to "porn is bad"?

Is all porn automatically bad, or only some?

    Etc. Smiley

I find it distasteful, but I don't think sex itself is immoral, so I don't think my distaste affects my attitude towards porn.

But going on decency, I find too much immodesty to be immoral, so I guess that would mean all types of porn are bad...

You're so helpful Os!!! grin12 But I think if I give reasons why I think porn are bad, that would be rationalising. :S I guess it could be useful if I want consistency in my beliefs though....

Okay Abood. Smiley I'm reading the Wiki article on "Sex Industry". Tongue Look!

    Quote
Businesses that provide sex services tend to cluster around military bases. The British naval port of Portsmouth had a flourishing local sex industry in the 19th century, and until the early 1990s there were large red light districts near American military bases in the Philippines. The Monto red-light district of Dublin, one of the largest in Europe, gained most of its custom from the British soldiers stationed in the city; indeed it collapsed after Irish independence was achieved and the soldiers left. The notorious Patpong entertainment district in Bangkok, and the city of Pattaya, Thailand, started as R&R locations for US troops serving in the Vietnam War in the early 1970s.

I hadn't known that! I hadn't even thought that soldiers would do stuff like that. My granddad was a military man, apparently in PK they're very strict about how the military behaves in terms of this stuff...(so says my mum.)

    Quote
The term anti-pornography movement is used to describe those who argue that pornography has a variety of harmful effects, such as encouragement of human trafficking, desensitization, pedophilia, dehumanization, exploitation, sexual dysfunction, and inability to maintain healthy sexual relationships.

That makes sense, but I don't know if it's true.

    Quote
Dolf Zillmann asserts that extensive viewing of pornographic material produces many sociological effects which he characterizes as unfavorable, including a decreased respect for long-term, monogamous relationships, and an attenuated desire for procreation.[5] He claims that pornography can "potentially undermine the traditional values that favor marriage, family, and children" and it depicts sexuality in a way which is not connected to "emotional attachment, of kindness, of caring, and especially not of continuance of the relationship, as such continuance would translate into responsibilities"[6]

    Cool.

    Quote
Some feminists object to the sex industry, which they argue is exploitative of women who work in it and contributes to the male-centered objectification of women,

Oh, I agree with that. I guess I could have mentioned it in the OP but I forgot.

    Quote
Feminists argue that, in most cases, prostitution is not a conscious and calculated choice. They say that most women who become prostitutes do so because they were forced or coerced by a pimp or by human trafficking, or, when it is an independent decision, it is generally the result of extreme poverty and lack of opportunity, or of serious underlying problems, such as drug addiction, past trauma (such as child sexual abuse) and other unfortunate circumstances

So I guess they argue to reduce the underlying causes. Cool. Again. Smiley

    Quote
Based on these arguments, Sweden, Norway and Iceland have criminalized the buying, but not the selling, of sexual services (the client commits a crime, but not the prostitute).

    That's a cool idea Tongue

This entire article is so interesting! Tongue

    Quote

Like, is that true do you guys think? :S

    Quote
However, other feminists are opposed to censorship,

    I'm not opposed to censorship.

    Quote
The sex industry also raises concerns about the spread of STDs.

    That too. yes

K, so instead of being a thread about porn philosophically (which was the entire point Roll Eyes ), this is now a thread for me quote all the cool things on Wiki re: porn. Like this:

    Quote from: Wiki
A distinction is often made between erotica (the portrayal of sexuality with high-art aspirations, focusing also on feelings and emotions) and pornography (the depiction of acts in a sensational manner, with the entire focus on the physical act, so as to arouse quick intense reactions

I hadn't known people distinguished between the two. They both seem bad to me. Tongue

    Quote
A distinction is made between hardcore and softcore pornography. Softcore pornography can generally be described as focusing on nude modeling and suggestive, but not explicit, simulations of sexual intercourse, whereas hardcore pornography explicitly showcases penetrative intercourse. The consumers of porn (particularly hardcore) are assumed to be men, and thus most production targets their presumed tastes.

Ugh, see, it makes sex into some sort of profit/loss scheme. Why isn't this wrong?! :/ Sex isn't a commodity or something.

    Quote
When large scale excavations of Pompeii were undertaken in the 1860s, much of the erotic art of the Romans came to light, shocking the Victorians who saw themselves as the intellectual heirs of the Roman Empire. They did not know what to do with the frank depictions of sexuality, and endeavored to hide them away from everyone but upper class scholars. The moveable objects were locked away in the Secret Museum in Naples and what could not be removed was covered and cordoned off as to not corrupt the sensibilities of women, children and the working class.

    LOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

    Quote
Due to the popularity of 3D blockbusters in theaters such as Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon, companies are now looking to shoot pornography movies in 3D.

Reminds me of Brave New World. I guess I think porn reduces men to animals. I know we're 'technically' the same, but honestly, I don't believe that. People are so different if they choose to be.

    Quote
Some people, including pornography producer Larry Flynt and the writer Salman Rushdie,[36] have argued that pornography is vital to freedom and that a free and civilized society should be judged by its willingness to accept pornography.
