I've seen us do well. Under Bobby Robson. Under Venebles. And even under Hoddle and Coppella in patches. We're never going to be the most technically gifted team in the world, but when we play to our strengths, with the right manager and the right players playing the way they were born to play, we are a match for anyone. The right way for England is with heart. With guts. With a tempo that frightens the opposition. We need to be direct. We need players to get to the touchline and bomb it in for our talented, strong centre forwards. We need the midfield to terrorise and bully anyone who comes their way. We need to use our pace, use our muscle, always with an eye to getting forward, and fast.
Hodgson has imposed an Italian system on us, without having the Italian players to make that a success. We arent astute enough to defend the opposition into submission. We aren't technical enough to provide the flashes of flair that will sneak a goal, against the run of play. We rode our luck through the whole tournament, and finally got the comeuppance we deserved. And it's possibly better coming at the hands of the wasteful Italians, than it would have been against the utterly ruthless Germans.
Bring on Redkapp. Bring back football, English style.
