    Quote
Why are Western women sympathetic to Islam? Why are we not repulsed by an ideology that classes us as inferior, that could have married us off at nine, that allows our husbands to beat us and our three co-wives, and would have us stoned to death for “adultery” even when this results from rape? I can understand – barely – the attraction of Islam for Western men, particularly those who are not keen on uppity women{ Cheesy}. But for women? It defies common sense.

    Quote
Women and girls unfortunate enough to live under Islamic law, or even in nominally secular countries where Islam holds sway, have little choice but to submit to their fate. To speak out against it is to invite at best ostracism and at worst honour killing. However, in the West, in the free world, where the individual is valued and where women are starting to attain something resembling equal rights, we do have a choice, and a duty to exercise our freedom responsibly. For Western women, the only rational response to Islam should be revulsion, with a smattering of contempt and mockery. Fear, lest this ideology come to power, is also rational. But respect, even tolerance, for Islam, is irresponsible and dangerous. Western women who freely embrace Islam, or who speak favourably of it are misguided or wilfully ignorant and occasionally wicked. I call these women dozy bints.

    Quote
Dozy bints do matter. They make Islam seem like a harmless diversion. Perhaps, for them, it is. Like Marie Antoinette playing shepherdess, they can stop at any time. But for every Western woman who claims that she wears the niqab out of free choice, there are thousands of women in Muslim countries whom this choice insults, and who would throw off their “portable seclusion” in an instant if they could. Islam is not a harmless diversion. It is the most retrograde force on earth and a serious threat to Western civilisation. For women, in particular, opting for Islam is like a turkey voting for Christmas. It is not a game, and in the defence of our civilisation there is no place for the dozy bint.

The real comedy here is that anyone might think the New English Review a credible magazine.

    I laughed.

Credible magazine or not, what she says is so true.  My dozy daughter is one of them.

Excellent article imo.  Afro  Afro  Afro

How can anyone take this article seriously? It cites a Shia leader using the words of Aisha - an apostate according to their faith - as justification for their deeds.

Besides what's wrong with converting to Islam as opposed to any other religion? Surely it depends on the interpretation? If these women are free and independent to make these choices then it shouldn't matter!

This website reeks of bigotry and is littered with logical fallacies: I pity the soul who finds it enlightening, I suppose for people on here - especially ex-Muslim women who may have had a bad experience of Islam - it's just stimulates their confirmation bias.

Author sounded pretentious. I thought it was awful and reeked of loaded statements. She can't seem to accept that some people actually make choices that she finds confounding. I thought the best part of the article was when she quoted Leila Abu-Lughod (and proceeded to completely ignore her points).

And I LOLed here [describing Tariq Ramadan]:

    Quote
Rather attractive, isn’t he, with his liquid brown eyes, hands soft, yet strong, his sensuous but cruel mouth, twitching at the corners with something like amusement?

Cheesy Cheesy He's charismatic. So was Hitchens. Sheesh.

I've never heard of this site. Is it usually like this?

Self ban for Ramadan (THAT RHYMES)

It certainly should be taken seriously. The article makes quite a few decent points. What is most depressing is that these kinds of points are made in a right wing magazine / website, and that it isn't the Left that are making them.

@Maya, How do you Muslim converts subscribe to that particular interpretation? I very much doubt Western women would accept an inferior status!

    1) I have spoken to countless Muslim women - both converts and those raised in Islam - who would never accept their husbands laying a finger on them; however,  when I mention the verses in the Quran which supposedly gives their spouses the right to 'discipline' them,  they claim it's not applicable to the modern age rather like commandments pertaining to slavery.

    2) Where in the Quran does it cite stoning for a rape victim?

    3) That's a non-sequitur, why should Muslim converts be held responsible for the mistreatment of their 'sisters' in oppressed Islamic theocracies, which they most probably condemn?

Stop projecting your own personal bad experiences of Islam on Muslim converts who have found peace and happiness with their new found faith - just because you can't understand their choices doesn't mean their lives are worse off.

Here is the thing. We can all agree that the ethos of this website might be objectionable. That it contains support for a form of politics that we find wrong. That the language in which it makes its points may be exaggerated or without nuance.

But it is what it is - a site from the right side of political philosophy.

What is really objectionable to my mind is how reactionary Islamists have been feted by and elevated and embraced by the Left. How and why is it that Tariq Ramadan and other reactionaries plying a veneer of progressive rhetoric are coddled by the large parts of the modern British Left establishment?

In the matter of rendering apologia for Islamists parts of the Left are deeply unintelligent.

Presumably the projection of 'bad experiences' of non Islamic things in the pursuit of dawah and innocculating Islam or the ideas of certain Muslim precepts is acceptable?

Of course it isn't, anecdotal evidence is a weak substitute for scientific rigour of statistics, observation etc!

I'd rather hoped you would have taken the point without being led to it.

It was a counter argument using the same flawed logic as her's - and the article's - in order to highlight the futility of 'personal experiences', duh? Are you sure you aren't ring-wing? It would sure back-up the findings that I cited earlier?

I rather have Tariq Ramadhan preaching Islam than Abu Qatada - I have no problems with my former faith as long as it adheres to the law of the land. If they wish to follow some medieval book then that's their prerogative, we live in a free country - let people follow whatever nonsense they want!

Well, the likes of Abu Qatada and others like Anjum Chauhdry create gratefulness in perturbed people for those who are not as explicitly and urgently demented as they are, for sure.

Pretty much how socialists are viewed in relation to communists that worship Stalin or Mao! As long as you support democracy and freedom then I have no problem nor should anyone with a modicum of reason.

Thankfully reason and critical scrutiny go hand in hand in scrutinising Islamism as an ideology and form of identity-politics - being grateful for small mercies in the light of a more urgent derangement along that continuum isn't a stop on that.

Incidentally, seeing 'LoL!' in a thread title without irony gives me a headache.

In fact the whole title is what is most irksome in the piece, using an abusive tone and phrasing to overlay whatever points are being made.

Look 247 I am neither for the right nor the left.  I don't care where a particular article comes from or who said what.  If I think it's valid then it's valid, end of as far as I'm concerned.

btw I am not, never have been and never will be a muslim, convert or otherwise.  Yes if dozy bints want to go ahead and convert to Islam that's their affair, I agree, but when they start spouting off to anybody who will listen about  how Islam is so great and go on to speak so highly of it then I have no problem whatsoever with any counter-arguments about it.  Strange how whenever anybody converts to Islam it's always reported on, whether on TV, mainstream press and the internet yet whenever anybody leaves it's always conspicuously silent.

@Maya, then I apologise as your opinion counts for nothing!  You don't have a Muslim mother, sister etc! You won't appreciate how Islam has enriched their lives and how attacking their 'status' in the family - and the wider community - is an insult to them and to me : go fuck yourself if you think they would ever allow being hit my a man or getting raped because it's justified by their faith! Why you even here? Isn't there some other fascist forum where you can foam at the mouth?
  • Re: DOZY BINTS? LOL!

Whether they would allow isn't the question though, or martial rape. Is it allowed in various interpretations of Islam? Unabashedly the answer is yes. So it's a bit of an over reach to say "Islam is X or Islam is Y, or Islam doesn't allow X or Y". That's just an interpretation of which there are many. It's not enough to say " see this rosy glossed over reinterpretation of Islam I'm presenting, isn't Islam amazing? We can read the books, we know the spin put on it. That isn't to say that people can be uplifted or enhanced by Islam, but that's not all there is to Islam or else you're not being honest.
