  • A big hey to everyone!
     OP - June 26, 2012, 02:19 PM

    Hi CEMB members,

I feel so happy to have finally found a place of haven, a place to know that I'm not alone here in the UK. I heard about it before but never created an acount until yesterday. I became an exmulim around a year ago, and I've never looked back since. It all started ironically when I went to an Umrah trip with the entire family. There, I felt nothing. I'd look around and see people throwing themselves across a pointless cube, everyone seemed to 'think' in some way about believing and loving Allah that I could never comprehend to. And I didn't find the experience pleasant, I mean, I'm all for the travelling experience and seeing the beautiful architecture and scenery (the mountains and desert were bliss) but when praying, I wandered why I was praying. Who would be listening? This cube that represents a celestial diety? My parents shouted all the way through and forced me to pray extra hours, and pretty much be in a mosque reading quran and praying all the time when I was not sleeping or eating. I hated it. I knew that if I was raised in another family with Christian parents, then I'd definately be a Christian or of whatever faith. It was pure indoctrination I had since I was a kid, and I didn't know better. My mind was was easily shapeable by experience and their discipline and I wasn't allowed to ask questions or be those annoying disobedient 'challengers' of religion. I was thrown into mosque after school each day since I was like 5, and went to a wreck-of-a-Islamic school since I was 11. And it didn't help that my parents were very strict, traditional, even racist, bigots, and extremely xenophobic of other religions. I used to pray 5 times a day since I was around 10 or 11, and have this 'feeling' that God was watching me before, and it was all fine until I actually got to grips with how many religions are out there. When I developed a rational way of thinking critically, using reason, Islam made no sense at all. It was me being a slave, submitting to the will of a creator who was a mad smiting control-freak, a huge fucking bully. I learnt about the history of Islam as a young kid in mosque and would be amazed at the miracles like any youthful mind would be. But it's only when you start to look at why people find it so easy to believe! You'd think about the majestic nature of God but find that he's incredibly flawed in so many ways, it only makes sense to establish that he's man made from mr mo. I could never tell this to anyone in my family because they cannot be trusted and my parents would find out and behead me with a meat cleaver in the garden. They're really like that.... I have so many reasons on why I choose to be an atheist, a strong atheist - almost antitheist and very much enjoy a good debate but I'll keep this into short for now.

Also, I'm happy to say that I had my last moment of doubt around 2 days ago when I made the following post on reddit exmuslim: redd.it/vjsoe . I'm happy and okay and have found my path again, as you'll find in a little rant I had in the comments section later on that I guess might be worth reading.

So I raise my glasses to you, good people, and I already love you all before even knowing you, for having the courage and being the lucky ones to realise the truth.

    dance

    much love,

I can't really find the reddit post that you're directing us too. Is it possible for you to give us a url, or maybe it's just the spam filters preventing that.  Grin

@asbie Thank you! Yes, I remember links not working before, I guess it must be the spam filters. The redd.it url in itself shoud be an shortener that ought to redirect onto the reddit post. There, forgive me for my bad language, it was a deep jolting moment - but then again, didn't we at some point in out lives believe that revelations and epiphanies never did come as experiences of calm, beauty, and lucidity? teehee  Roll Eyes

@yeeezevee Lovely vids, thanks for sharing! I've watched them before on 4OD and I think I have to give Dawkins a lot of credit to where I am today (and I still love the guy, he's epic!) at the time because it one of the first resources I stumbled upon which woke me up to the world of freethinking. In essence, this (goo.gl/WvfGx) was what it felt like after watching the two-part series, because I could so relate to it and for the first time, I had understood what had happened to me in my life!

Edit: Also, I found that being in the UK, the vids yeezevee posted appear to be blocked. If anyone else is having the same problem, I found an easy bypass by using a Firefox addon called ProxTube (goo.gl/QLLcO) which you download to Firefox (so no messy IP switching software) and pretty much forget about, and whenever you come across a "This video has been blocked ....", it automatically bypasses it in seconds and starts buffering it up before your very eyes. I can't recommend this enough, it's incredibly underrated and has to be one of the best things I found on firefox (here, I'd again insert that pic I used above  Cheesy ). And on YouTube, you get a lot more search results as there's a button by the search feature which lets you "search using ProxTube" but this little feature recently disappeared for me as I'm always updating FF, so I used Google Vids to get the redirect to find the vids, then ProxTube does its magic. Here's a test link I just watched (pretty good stuff for Banged Up Abroad) for anyone the UK: (goo.gl/Y14Ox) - I hope ProxTube can help someone here on CEMB Afro

    Cheers!

I suppose as of this current moment, the beheading part would be somewhat gross hyperbole - but my parents are violent, I've seen and have been unfortunate enough to have experienced it before and it's clear to me that they are total intolerants who agree entirely that apostates should meet the swift end of the sword. If they knew they could get away with it in this country, I really think they wouldn't even hesitate. If they found out about me, I'd get the boot at the very least, but I'm hoping to move out when I finish my degree.  dance

    Welcome Mindboom,
I always admire you young folk who have the courage and intelligents to apply critical thinking to the beleif system you were raised with and come out the other side being able to think freely for yourself. The fact that traditionally the only get out clause of this ideology was the death penalty should be enough to make any straight thinking person question the legitamcy of it's teachings.

    A, E, I...

Oh, you! We might need to do a parental verification test.

If there's a Brother/Singer sewing machine downstairs, and you aren't related to anyone who studied music, and mom and dad drink 3 or more cups of tea a day, and the 7-seater car in the driveway seems to fit 20 in there, ooh, and if mom and day say that Paracetamol' is your cure to every illness, AND the tv remote control is still in its plastic packet... and not a day has gone by where mom and dad has compared us to their friends' kids.... If you've answered yes to all of these, then I'll clean your room for a month if your don't tell anyone about.... my ... rogering habits!

But wait! I need to be absolutely certain. Sorry for being so pedantic, but, if there's a tub of 'PRIDE GHEE' and a sack of 'TILDA BASMATI' in the hallway and mom and dad have a panic attack when something dirty comes on t.v, and that wedding we all had to go to not long ago we all had to get cramped up in the back seat multiple times because we had to give the entire population of the wedding a lift home, and half of those people we haven't even seen before.... and at that wedding, that mom and sis wore more glitter and sparkly bits than a christmas tree and finally, we all watched a zee-tv series (you know which one, it's too embarrasing to reveal) which frame raped every scene with endless zooming before we all went to bed... if it's still a yes to all of these, then hay-soos! Why didn't you tell me about this forum before, bro?!
