  • The 90/10 principle
     OP - June 26, 2012, 08:02 PM

Have you read this before? Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life

(at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle?

10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean?

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.

How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light., but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.

Good principle but easier said than done though at times.  Grin

Well that's calmed me down now, even if I knew it already Afro Though it's hard to accept the 10% part, I really hate the idea of not having control...

This is all well and good for the little things that may aggravate many of us in our bourgeoisie existence. However we really don't control either the circumstances or the reactions surrounding the truly big/life changing events that shape and define our existence. I mean, someone contracts HIV they aren't gonna be trying to frame that shit positively like "whoopee, what a wonderful opportunity to experience new things!" They're gonna be grieving. So anyway, to sum up my reaction to this theory:

This is pretty obvious. Life is loads less stressful when you stop worrying about things you can't control and changing the things you can that you're not satisfied with.

Familiar things happen, and mankind does not bother about them. It requires a very unusual mind to undertake the analysis of the obvious.
     -----------------------Alfred Whitehead

Modern life is so complex and fast paced that the obvious things are not so obvious many a times!
