Hi guys!

Last year I was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and pervasive developmental disability so basically that means I am mildly autistic. So, I was just wondering if any of you or a family member have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and what the Islamic attitude is toward neurological disorders such as autism.

I don't know anything about the subject, but there is a British Muslim journalist who wrote a book about his experience of autism. I don't know if he touches specifically on how Islam directly regards this, but you might find it of interest.

hi Nour..

first, now you know, and so now you can take steps to help you for the future..
my 8 year old Laila has autism, diagnosed with PDD also.. when i found out , i immersed myself with videos, tapes, books, to really try to understand it.. it's a journey everyday, but (cheesey but true) every great struggle has some remarkable rewards..
my daughter was 4 when she said "mama" for the first time.. brought me to my knees she did..
she is now full force.. and we can't get her to stop talking lol..

... a close muslim friend of my family implied that Laila's mental problems were Allah's way of punishing me for taking off the hijab...

i don't know where you are from, but it helped us, (me and the kids) to get involved with programs run by the city for autistic kids/teens...

Thank you, guys, for your responses. It's good to be back here with you guys!

I do not come from a Muslim background so that is why I wanted to bring the subject up here. I'm not saying that having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a bad thing. I have several friends who have ASD and we are not looking for a 'cure' to autism but want to aid and assist those who find it difficult to deal with others socially. We are focusing on targeting high school students and giving them the tools to cope with everyday social interactions which can be very tough for people with ASD.
Alright, Jeopardy is on in a few minutes. Gotta get my fill of brainiac nerdism.
