Yeah, Olympic history right there. First woman to win any Olympic medal in boxing.

Easily one of the better boxing matches I've seen in recent years. Adams could have won by old skool knockout if she had a few more rounds of fight to play with. It's actually refreshing to see a boxer put someone on their arse from a punch. Also refreshing to see flurries and combos connecting instead of hitting guard or hitting air. It looked almost choreographed in places, that's how good it was. It was like watching Rocky. Except a different version where Rocky actually wins.

Another impressive win from Katie Taylor afterwards too. The Irish crowd made it something special. She got a lot of love. Deserved it.

A good day. Showing the naysayers and proving without any doubt that women's boxing is the real deal and deserves be in the Olympics.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

she's a tough girl of course, but the technical boxing skill was just so impressive. the irish totally took over that arena, lol

If three Americans had finished one, two and three would they have shown the same camaraderie as the three jamaicans are showing? If not, is this down to Usain.

Only saw the first minute - had to eat.

Maybe it is because so many of the hoi polloi are watching these games, interesting to see viewing figures for previous Olympics not held here i.e nearly all of them and when it is so ubiquitous and easily consumed.

Then perhaps the BBC were fielding questions from these sort of people.

Or to push the Jessica Ennis, Zoe Smith, et al. Best of both worlds. Harking back to Danny Boyle's view of the mixed nature of London and its athletes. I regret saying previously something that may have across that I have a negative views of mixed race kids, my sister is expecting a kid with her English partner, and the one girl who 'got away' but was 'the one' was the adopted (by middle class English parents) daughter of a Bajan sailor and an English prostitute with the usual drug habit. Regret - my parents were different people twenty years ago.

These athletes must have had good parents or parent along with the talent to keep them off the streets.

Though as I didn't see more than a minute this could all be bollux. Lol

Lol. Perhaps it was the sugar/nicotine rush after a day's fasting.

You said strange, I saw the first minute and was  musing why the BBC were showing it.

Maybe because so many of the public are watching this, the idea of race genetics in sport not just an article in a broadsheet, but needs a few minutes on prime-time BBC to explain.

Though like I said I only saw the first minute, so it could be bollux.

I also wanted at some point to relay the fact that I did not have anything against mixed race kids which may have formed because of my comments about single mothers and brown kids from the opening ceremony.

    My attempt was cryptic.

Well, the subject itself is fascinating. It's just an odd thing to talk about at the Olympics. An odd thing to try and cover in a bite-size pop piece. And somewhat peripheral to the Olympic spirit.

Never again will be the opportunity to impart that information to the widest audience in a timespan just enough to keep the average Joe's attention span.

Medals wise, looking at Beijing medal table, (it seems GB are Australia in disguise) GB did finish fourth but this time seem to have won medals that previously went to the likes of Russia, Germany and Australia. Russia suffers from the splitting up of USSR, wonder where they would be in the table.

Saddest thing- Bangladesh, India, Pakistan - nearly a quarter of the world's population and they manage to spit, I don't know, a few bronzes, a gold perhaps.

Anyone been watching the rhythmic gymnastics?

    Yep.

The spell broke rather when the Russian favourite for the event went into second place above an immaculate Korean despite three times dropping her hoop. Difficult routine or no, that typified the marking on reputation rather than strictly on performance that ruins skating as well.

Are rhythmic gymnasts failed ballerinas or failed gymnasts? As a sport I don't buy it at all, but if footballers put in half as much work on their skills and conditioning as they do, then the beautiful game would be just that.

    Clumsy, verbose post. sorry.

Are rhythmic gymnasts failed ballerinas or failed gymnasts?

I don't think that's fair. Rhythmic gymnasts work just as hard as any other competitor in any other athletic discipline. It's a shame they don't get nearly the same amount of respect. I think the discipline itself suffers, ever so slightly, from existing in that sliver of ambiguity between fully-free expression like Cirque du Soleil, and actual points-based competition. But then I also think, because of that, it has become something uniquely pretty in itself. To me, it is at times some of the most disarmingly beautiful displays of what the human body is capable of with passion and dedication. Not as astonishing and heart-stopping as some of what the Artistic gymnasts are doing, but impressive and emotionally rousing in its own way none the less.

As a sport I don't buy it at all, but if footballers put in half as much work on their skills and conditioning as they do, then the beautiful game would be just that.

It's like any sport, I suppose. You're either feeling it or you're not. I think it's great that Rhythmic Gymnastics exists, though, since the expressive art element is often phased out of Artistic Gymnastics in favour of the gain in power. And to be able to go from something as delicate and subtle as this all the way through the wonderful spectrum of variety to something like the shot put or weightlifting is what makes the Olympic Games so special for me.

I'm with David on the rhythmic gymnastics. I rate it down at the same level as synchornised swimming. A big meh.

Someone tried to tell me that rhythmic gymnastics takes skill and training, etc, etc. I replied that this is true, and their stuff is clever, but fucking a drug-crazed ferret would also take skill and determination. It's still not a pastime that interests me, and I'd prefer not to see it in the Olympics.

I have hearby dubbed the rhythmic gymnasts and the synchronised cheesy grins swimmers "ferret fuckers". They shall be know as such for evermore. yes

I wouldn't argue with much of that, Ishina. They are amazing athlete-performers, and they have the most beautiful bodies in the Olympics.

I just don't like subjectively-judged sports or glitzy, showbizzy sports, be it 'naff' rhythmic gymnastics or 'cool' X-Games stuff.

This didn't stop me enjoying it yesterday, but I enjoyed the Greco-Roman wrestling more. Now there's a sport. Both women in the (?)48 kilo final went into the bout with black eyes.

Say what? Cheesy I think that overall they are some of the least beautiful women in the Olympics. They're just so fake and so prissy. They belong in bloody Las Vegas. Unfortunately tonight's coverage is infested with them. Shit happens.

However, we did beat the Poms in the sailing again. This is a momentous occasion. Australia > Borat now! party!

And so does chucking a sharp stick take skill and determination, jumping in a sand pit, or running for a bit.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
