Are rhythmic gymnasts failed ballerinas or failed gymnasts?
I don't think that's fair. Rhythmic gymnasts work just as hard as any other competitor in any other athletic discipline. It's a shame they don't get nearly the same amount of respect. I think the discipline itself suffers, ever so slightly, from existing in that sliver of ambiguity between fully-free expression like
Cirque du Soleil, and actual points-based competition. But then I also think, because of that, it has become something uniquely pretty in itself. To me, it is at times some of the most disarmingly beautiful displays of what the human body is capable of with passion and dedication. Not as astonishing and heart-stopping as some of what the Artistic gymnasts are doing, but impressive and emotionally rousing in its own way none the less.
As a sport I don't buy it at all, but if footballers put in half as much work on their skills and conditioning as they do, then the beautiful game would be just that.
It's like any sport, I suppose. You're either feeling it or you're not. I think it's great that Rhythmic Gymnastics exists, though, since the expressive art element is often phased out of Artistic Gymnastics in favour of the gain in power. And to be able to go from something as delicate and subtle as this all the way through the wonderful spectrum of variety to something like the shot put or weightlifting is what makes the Olympic Games so special for me.
