  • Hand in Hand for Syria and Equality Now
     OP - July 19, 2012, 07:18 PM

A Syrian friend and colleague got a phone call two weeks ago to tell him that he'd lost his family during a missile bombing of his home town. To show him and all those suffering in Syria and border refugee camps support, some friends and I are raising money for a small charity called Hand in Hand for Syria who provide medical and humanitarian aid to civilians. What started out as just my housemate and I running the Cardiff Half Marathon has become an increasingly large group including people from the UK, Ireland, Malaysia, Switzerland and Syria.

As an added insentive, for the first £250 I get from CEMBers and a few other groups I'll match it and donate that same amount to Equality Now, a charity working for an end to violence and discrimination against women and girls across the world. So if you can donate £20, Hand in Hand for Syria and Equality Now will get £40 total...two good causes for the price of one; it's a no brainer! Please remember to include "(CEMB)" in the comments field when filling in the sponsorship page so I know to double it up. If you can't afford to pledge any money, your messages of support are gratefully received. Thanks very much Smiley x

Thank you Thinkfree! We're almost at £1400 now and there's a nice bunch of donations from CEMBers Smiley. I can reveal that you're absolutely trouncing British Muslims for a Secular Democracy (BMSD) in the amount raised; Murtads FTW! Keep the donations coming in and remember to include "CEMB" in the comments! Cheers x

We're over half way, with £1867 plus Gift Aid! Smiley If you can't donate yourself, please share the link on Facebook, Twitter and with friends/family (tell the religious ones that it's Ramadan and they should be hitting that charity shit like never before). Remember to add "(CEMB)" somewhere in the comments. x

Only a few days to go now!  We're raising funds towards clothing, medicine, shelter and food for people in Syria and surrounding refugee camps. Thank you so much to all the CEMB forum members who've helped us to get over 70% of the way to £3000. Can you help us get all the way?

Any amount is really appreciated and the first £250 from CEMBers and a few other groups will be matched and donated to Equality Now, fighting violence and discrimination again women. Two great causes for the price of one Smiley

Fund raising page is here: http://www.justgiving.com/sweatforsyria

As a Syrian and someone who is seriously concerned with the condition at the moment I seriously appreciate your cause. I would donate at the moment but I am unable to, when I next can, I will. Meanwhile, I will share this link with as many people as possible.

    Appreciated.

Wooohooo, with the generosity of almost two hundred people and lots of cake baking and selling, we got to our target of £3000, and then some. Thank you so much to all of the CEMB members who've supported this; you're living refutations of the assertion that you can't be 'Good without God'.

I'm also raising for the women's rights charity Equality Now, who fight violence and discrimination against women around the world. If you'd like to contribute but haven't got round to it yet please visit the website below and I'll match all donations from CEMB members so the charities will get £20 for every £10 you donate Smiley

    Thanks again,

    Final update on this:

The Sunday before last ten of us, plus a couple of supporters, took a trip over the Severn Bridge to run the Cardiff Half Marathon. Everyone completed the course in very respectable time (awful photos available on request). Post-race, we limped off to a restaurant to enjoy delicious Syrian cuisine and compare blisters. A fun, if slightly painful, day was had by all.

In total, for Hand in Hand for Syria and Equality Now we've raised over £5000!!

To those who sponsored my cheeky side collection for Equality Now, your donations have been matched and donated to Hand in Hand for Syria. And to everyone from the CEMB (and Bath Atheists, Humanists and Secularists) your sponsorships have been matched and donated to Equality Now!

Thank you so much to everyone here who donated and shared the fundraising page. This is the second time I've done a fund raising thing like this (the first time was raising money the British Humanist Association) and both times CEMB forum members have been incredible in their generosity. Without intending to, you've made quite an impact on a Muslim friend who had, until now, been under the impression that non-religious people were without moral direction. So two good causes and a somewhat enlightened mind - good job! x

^This. I'm sure the people of Syria are grateful.
