Niyyat is a commonly used Arabic word in the Muslim world meaning "Intention".[1] That the importance of "intention" is paramount in Islamic observances is clear from the very first hadith of the compilation "Sahih Bukhari" which states that "definitely all actions are (based) on intentions."

This is different to Judaism and Christianity. Seems to be Islam specific. What's it about?

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. AFAIK, it's a simple way of stopping people going all Jesus Christ has meant all my sins are forgiven. I.e. I can't just sit down and pray away all the pre-marital sex, Pokemon and voting for ~~Labour~~ Lib Dems away. I have to feel bad and shitty in the bottom of my blackened heart. It's just another guilt mechanism.

How can you reason with someone who hasn't used reason to get there in the first place?

That is not true Devil., That word "niyyat" is is there Every language of subcontinent apart from Persian and Arabic.. you can find that word in Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi; Saraiki; Urdu and in Balochi., Also you can find that in Indian languages such as Gujarati, Bengali, Hindi, etc..etc..

A quick search on "the word niyat in Indian languages" in Google God connects you that Guy of India Mr. Narendra Modi ..The ........,

"said the UPA lacks Neta, Niti and Niyat to govern India"

for e.g. the wording " thumara Niyat teek nahin" is quite common usage across subcontinent..
