Candy Chang: Before I Die...

It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. When Candy lost someone she loved very much, she thought about death a lot. This helped clarify her life but she struggled to maintain perspective. She wanted to know what was important to the people around her. So with help from old and new friends, she turned the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans into a giant chalkboard and stenciled it with the sentence "Before I die I want to _______." so anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.

It was all an experiment. By the next day the wall was entirely filled out and it kept growing. Before I die I want to… sing for millions, see my daughter graduate, straddle the International Date Line, see the leaves change many times, be someone’s cavalry, live off the grid, build a school, hold her one more time, abandon all insecurities, be completely myself… People’s hopes and dreams made her laugh out loud, tear up, and feel consolation during her own tough times. The wall transformed a neglected space into a constructive one where we can understand our neighbors in new and enlightening ways, restore perspective, and remember we are not alone... [Read more]

- work at a big cat sanctuary in Africa
- do something meaningful and life changing for those less fortunate with my photography

This might sound all world peacey, but I really wanna live long enough to see some real progression in LGBT rights across the globe. Imagine a time when people don't even need to 'come out', where binary gender identity is a thing of the past and the full spectrum of sexuality is already out in full bloom.

It'd be nice to see Islam, Christianity and Judaism relegated to the same status as other ancient mythology in my lifetime too, at least in the so-called civilised world. I'd like to see just one generation free of the shackles of religious dogma in an age where it is no longer socially acceptable to profess belief in such fundamentally stupid beliefs.

Some big discovery in the universe would light me up, maybe some clearer insight into what the universe is, the discovery of alien life however simple or complex it might be, new clues as to how functional life began on Earth, an innovation in space travel or maybe a complete new invention for a more efficient means to traverse such massive distances, a manned mission to Mars perhaps, or one of the mysterious and alluring moons of the outer planets, or maybe just a resurge in space exploration in general and an invigorated public interest in it.

It would be a good time to be alive.

No more having to worry about stupid drivers, or people who are driving while intoxicated. The Google Self-Driving car has already been approved in Nevada and it's on it's way towards being approved in California.

Or even a bit of coke (as a one-off). Please try never to get drawn in to Heroin, and especially not Crack. Most people who even stumble into those, end up staying for a long, long time. And I don't think it bodes well for someone to go into H, with their eyes open with excitement. It could end up destroying everything that is beautiful and cool about you, and that'd be a shame.
