  • Religion is Bad
     OP - September 22, 2012, 06:58 PM

My question is simple. Why do you think religion is bad?

You. Ight not think it is, then I'd ask you what role is religion playing in the world this day?

I've met different people who apply religion differently. I wouldn't choose to apply religioN to my life or seek guidance from it because I know it's man made and if I need any sort of guidance I can seek it from mankind and reflect upon the feedback to at least feel I came to my own conclusions.

For a long time I thought religion was bad due to my resentment to it. Every now and then this feeling will pop up when it's very difficult to discuss with another person why they say what they say and the fact that I think they have been indoctrinated to think so. An example is a short conversation I had with a colleague about thE American embossed or in Libya. She stated that Muslims had the right to kill him or in other words that it was good because the movie the whole episode was about was horrendous. She didn't seem too bothered by the movie to be honest . She saw it before I did and was mainly upset about an actor acting mohammed out. She said Muslims never refer to mohammed in real images and that was supposed to be a standard the west lived by as well is what I gathered from her. At these moments I think religion has played a bad role and I am completely aware that she hasn't given much thought to both sides and would rather be safe about her assumption which I don't consider safe at all.

So what's your general intake on religion ? What is it to you that makes it such a bad idea for humanity to follow?

I don't think religious people are necessarily bad but I think religion in itself is a bad thing, look at what it teaches u, look at how it refers to unbelievers and to people who dont belong to that particular religion, religions only serve to divide people, Muslims, Christians, Jews etc etc... there is no way a Muslim would consider a Christian righteous and vice versa.

Some people apply religion differently, some people take the hippy aspect of religion some don't and this is where the problems start but even the ones that take the hippy aspect of religion still think that they are superior to the rest of humanity because they supposedly have the truth or posses it and the rest live in ignorance, I also don't see how can a hippy Muslim or Christian consider the rest of religions OK or respect them, if u consider ur religion to be the TRUTH which obviously they do, then how is it possible that u respect other religions, in the face of Absolute truth there is no tolerance for falsity, it would be completely vacuous and intelligible to respect falsity, all these problems vanish when we apply the humanistic view, we should all embrace the fact that we are HUMANS and that no one really knows or has the Absolute Truth, if we embrace this I think there will be a lot less troubles in the world and a lot less conflicts.

Mufa9a, I use to think that too. But there's more to religion than dogma. There's tradition, community, heritage, ritual, spirituality and the feeling that you're not alone in this world. I love religion, personally. I think some religions are bad. I think some religions are in name only, masquerading when they really are abominations. I think revealed religions have the potential to be very bad, but that's not necessarily the case every time. Mystery religions have the potienial too, but since it isn't a 'sin' to think for yourself, the chances are much less. And sometimes it depends on the mindset of the time in question. For example, in antiquity it was very dangerous to be a Christian.

Afro This is the ultimate truth ! This can only happen when Man's tribalism has been successfully tamed.Looks like we have a long way to go still.

    ^

I don't know I guess but I still don't get how can some people believe in a Religion that Claims to be the Absolute Truth and still respect the rest of religions or take their opinions into consideration, I think Absolute Truth or Truth itself is not a democracy, what is true is true and there is no other way around it.

I THINK that religious people who claim to be tolerant and considerate towards people who regard their religion as hogwash are full of feces, maybe some are tolerant but then how can u be tolerant towards falsity and lies when u have the truth and how can u not regard urself above the rest if u know u have the truth and they don't.

What drives me away from religion or religious dogma is the superiority and smugness it gives u, it tells u to be nice and considerate to people who don't adhere to ur dogma but always keep in mind that u r right, debate them and all that stuff even if u don't succeed convincing them u still should feel secure about urself cuz u r right, it never tell u to doubt urself or be skeptical of what u r saying.

I am not that good at expressing my thoughts, I don't know how evincible I am to be honest.

So what I am trying to say is that religion or God teaches u to be tolerant towards people who don't speak the truth, I don't know, I know i have something more to add I just don't know how to put it.

Islam in particular has huge contradictions within its teachings. "merciful" "compassionate" a God that loves you more than your own parents would not want to send his creations to a hell. The very idea of an "infinite hell" created for a "finite" life is most evil, immoral. Even if that God were to exist, I could never follow him. The teaching "love me or burn" is something a mafia boss, a Zeus type would say. Is that worth praise? worth the worship?

My question is simple. Why do you think religion is bad?

Because it is annoying and wrong.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Religion distinguishes one from another. This separation, is of course among many, but it induces indifference and considering our nature, conflict is impelled. Sure there are unconditional separations such as skin colour, the difference is that religion asserts that opposing religions are misguided and originated of evil. This tampers with the congruity of society quite badly. Thats one aspect of why religion that is bad.

Another aspect is the discouragement of knowledge seeking. Religion is against any consideration of renunciation. It closes ones mind psychologically so they are left oblivious to reason, and considering my views on theology, they are oblivious to the truth. Human knowledge must evolve, as it always had. Religion is indecorous with the advancement of human knowledge.

My main beef with religion, which I feel really passionate about, is how religion limits ones life. We are blessed with a life. Our lives is everything. How does religion value this everything of us? A mere test for the after life. Since I, and many, rebuke heaven and hell, we perceive others to have limited their lives for a non existent paradise. This is simply shitting on something that is intensely valuable.
