I help out with a children's after school art club. Some Muslim mums have said they do not want their children drawing and painting animals and people.

Googling, I understand there are hadith allowing these animate images on children's clothes.

But I would basically love some strategies to allow children to paint and draw and sculpt freely.

Any thoughts most welcome.

well clearly they are either Salafi/wahabi mothers or wives of Salafi/wahabi Islamic intellectuals. So moi you have very limited choice picking up an art subject that satisfies the parents of these kids . The only think I can think of is the Painting mosques and moon... , It means you convincing thees foolish parents that what you are teaching is actually Islamic values and Islamic architecture ..

I was told when I was a kid not to draw a full image of a person or any other animal. Children here are asked not to draw eyes or noses or mouths or ears or legs or hands so that their drawings won't be haram. When they have to draw a full picture they must draw a line across the neck of the creature.

This what some wahabbis teach their kids I believe. You can discuss this with the muslim mums.

I have a bit more info behind this!

It seems one mum, four weeks after her son has been attending, with a normal art class with loads of pictures of animals and people, sculptures etc, has asked for a separate curriculum for her son. We have agreed to discuss this with her and say that is not possible.

Is this sort of behaviour common - someone getting a place - there are waiting lists for this, being aware of what happens, and then thinking they can change the rules?
