People find it offensive, people are silly and find a lot offensive. I don't really care for intentionally offending people unless there is a specific purpose (other than to just provoke a reaction or piss them off). Although freedom of speech should always be protected.

If some scientist wants to, then sure. The point it pointless antagonism which even I support sometimes, but with a topic like "Should we respect religion?"you're going to get butthurt people already so it's best to point out you know the actual very terrible cases of people getting locked up and killed for pointless stupid things like blasphemy.

Stupidity all around. There are so many real and legitimate things to attack this and other religions on. I just find it childish and stupid doing it this way. Yes they have a right to do it but it makes them and all atheists look like a bunch of knob ends.

It's about the intent I suppose, somehow I doubt monkeys have been used as a racist depiction of African people in most parts of Africa.

Eh, they're free to name the pineapple whatever they want but they can't expect that to encourage Muslims to discuss the topic of the debate. They need to know who their target audience is if their intent was really to promote a debate with people of faith. I know that if I were a Muslim at that university and saw the Muhammad pineapple, I would not want to be a part of any discussion and would get more defensive about my religion *shrug*

Well judging from the way the muslims in the middle east reacted violently to a random crappy video "innocence of muslims", people in Pakistan celebrating the murder of Salman Taseer for just suggesting removing the blasphemy law and the imprisonment of innocent people like Asia bibi and the 11-14 year old christian girl for something they probably didn't even do.   And even if they did do was a trivial thing that doesn't harm anyone in any way.

Not to mention the fiasco that occurred with Salman Rushdie when he just wrote a novel.  And add to that the fact that the majority of muslims support the death penalty for apostates (people who just develop a different opinion based on reason)

If that doesn't fit the definition of a barbaric savage then I don't know what does.

Erm, that included you too at some point y'know.

I wasn't calling for the death of people who had different opinions or running up to them or causing a nuisance over a silly cartoon or pineapple so ur argument is invalid.

LOLWUT Projection much? I never said you held any of those views? I was just alluding to the fact that you think most muslims are thick-skulled savages that can't be reasoned with. That would've included you at some point too, but here you are, an ex-muslim. And as an ex-muslim I would've thought you would have a little more regard for the muslim psyche and psychology behind their beliefs, but apparently not. Of course that is not to excuse the behaviour of some crazy muslims, but don't make sweeping statements and paint everyone with the same brush.

Well you would have a pretty hard time finding muslims who don't indoctrinate their kids with creationism or that support the complete removal of blasphemy and apostasy laws and the complete support of free speech.

Muslims like maajid nawaz, tarek fathah, imam usama hussein are rare but EVEN these liberal muslims like usama hasan themselves are oppressed by the deluded muslim majority(mob) and it is the mob to which I am referring to as savages.

So yes i admit that there are some muslims that aren't crazy as stated above but the fundamentalists are the majority. And they are a big problem for society.  I don't see what you think is wrong with that statement.

I'm a bit split on this. I understand the anger and the insult, as you're right, many muslims are deluded (as are many humans). But by calling them "barbaric savages", we lower ourselves to dehumanising. I don't feel like we need to 1) do that in order to understand how wrong they are 2) say that, as it lowers our (strong) credibility.

But then it does depend on whether you'd like to convince people about how deluded they are (i.e. change minds), or using it to express how emotional you feel on the topic (which you are of course entitled to! But it fulfills a different purpose).

How can you reason with someone who hasn't used reason to get there in the first place?

I'm not denying any of this, but you of all people should understand the reasons behind the perpetuation of fundamentalism. Savages is a very strong word and is dehumanizing. I myself held all of those fundamentalist views at some point, but I have changed. It is not entirely impossible for muslims to break out of that vicious cycle too. It's not that muslims are stupid, it's the cognitive dissonance and brain-washing they experience from a very young age that makes it hard to break through to them. If you understand that, then I find it very hard to grasp why you'd call most of them (bar the crazies - who are not the majority) barbaric savages. Anyway, this is going nowhere, so we might as well stop arguing over nothing.

I think Mo was probably more like a sour grapefruit or bitter gourd.

    This.

When you use language carefully and specifically, its the greatest weapon against religion. Like a scalpel. When you use it without accuracy it gives an alibi to religion.

That's not to say calling some individuals, or ideas barbaric, isn't appropriate. But those words are tactical nukes to be used effectively, not a Hiroshima bomb that is going to flatten a whole city.

Why is it insulting to call a pineapple mohammed?

    Sudanese teddy bear blasphemy case
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sudanese teddy bear blasphemy case concerns the 2007 arrest, trial, conviction, imprisonment and subsequent release of British schoolteacher Gillian Gibbons working at Unity High School, a school attended by middle-class Muslim and Christian children, in Khartoum, Sudan.[1]
    Contents  [hide]

    [edit]Arrest

Gillian Gibbons was born in 1953 and gained a BEd from the CF Mott College of Education in Prescot in 1975 (the college closed in 1992). Teaching in a school in Sudan, she was arrested for allegedly insulting Islam by allowing her class of six-year-olds to name a teddy bear "Muhammad".[2][3][1] A boy in the class, also named Muhammad, later claimed that the bear was named after him rather than the prophet. The boy said he was deeply hurt that his teacher, whom both he and the rest of his class grew to love as a friend, was treated in such a way.[3][not in citation given]

Initially it was thought that the complaint had originated from a parent of one of the children at the school.

However, it was later revealed that an office assistant employed at the school, Sara Khawad, had filed the complaint and was the key witness for the prosecution.[4] Khawad was said to be angry with the school's head teacher. "I was used by the secretary to get at the school," Gibbons told the Guardian shortly after her release.[1]
Sudan's legal system is strongly influenced by sharia, which prohibits depictions of Muhammad and other prophets.[1] However, many Muslim organizations in other countries publicly condemned the Sudanese over their reactions,[5] as Gibbons did not set out to cause offence.[6]

    [edit]Conviction and reaction

On 25 November 2007, Gibbons was arrested, interrogated and then put in a cell at a local police station.[7] On 28 November, it was reported that she had been formally charged under Section 125 of the Sudanese Criminal Act, for "insulting religion, inciting hatred, sexual harassment, racism, prostitution and showing contempt for religious beliefs".[8][9] This carries a maximum sentence of imprisonment, a fine, or 40 lashes. On 29 November 2007,

Gibbons was found guilty of "insulting religion;" one of the three counts against her, and was sentenced to 15 days' imprisonment and deportation.[10] The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella organization of British Muslim groups, including MPACUK[11] said the punishment was "completely unjustified"[12] and that it was "appalled",[13] and called on the Sudanese government to intervene.[14]

On 30 November approximately 10,000 protesters took to the streets in Khartoum[15], some of them waving swords and machetes, demanding Gibbons's execution after imams denounced her during Friday prayers.[16][17] During the march, chants of "Shame, shame on the UK," "No tolerance - execution" and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad" were heard. Witnesses reported that government employees were involved in inciting the protests.[18] Gibbons was then moved to a secret location because of fears for her safety.[19]
    [edit]Release

In an attempt to push for the release of Gibbons, two British Muslim peers (members of the House of Lords), Lord Ahmed (Labour) and Baroness Warsi (Conservative), visited Sudan with hopes of talking to the country's President Omar al-Bashir.[19]

While the two British politicians were meeting the President on 3 December it was announced that Mrs. Gibbons was to be released from prison having been granted a Presidential pardon. After eight days in jail, she was released into the care of the British embassy in Khartoum and then returned to Liverpool, after issuing a written statement saying: "I have a great respect for the Islamic religion and would not knowingly offend anyone."[20][21]
    [edit]Development

The school was closed until January 2008 for the safety of pupils and staff as reprisals were feared.[3][22]
